Possible transmission noise?

Heard a strange noise on my cars' inaugural road trip yesterday. It is like a faint, continuous thump or whump-whump noise. At first I thought it was something rotational attached to the serpentine belt since it seemed to occur in regular pulses, but whenever I parked the car and got out for a closer listen, it disappeared. When I got home I had someone step on the brake pedal and put the car into drive and the noise returned. Could it have to do with the transmission, maybe? Does this sound at all familiar to anyone? The noise is not blatantly loud, you have to really listen to hear it.

I have had tires make that kind of noise, but it sounds like yours does it in gear when not moving. My ac makes a little noise that goes away when shut off. Not sure.

I probably just have new car nervosa. Every little noise has me thinking of catastrophic engine or tranny failure. It is probably just the fluid swirling around inside the torque converter or something.

You need this looked at on site by a qualified mechanic to put your mind at ease, we cannot tell from here what it is, misleading guesses only.
