I recently purchased a 2001 Kia Sportage and I have a few questions that maybe you guys could help me out with. Ok here goes!

1. The heater/ a/c vents work but they only operate in the mode where the air blows directly in your face. I tried moving the switch to the mode where the air comes out near your feet and the setting where it defrosts the windshield to no avail. What could be the problem? and how can it be fixed?

2. How can I determine whether or not I have a keyless remote? I was told by the seller that he thougt that this Kia DID have the keyless remote but wasn't sure.

3. Sometimes when I am unlocking the front door, the factory alarm system goes off. How do I keep from setting it off each time I unlock the door?

Thanks in advance for any advice/answers that you can give!

THe vents are driven mechanically by a cable so it is probable the cable got out of its holder clamps. THe button must show mechanical resistance to motion because it directly activates the vents and we hear the flaps actually move in the ducts so if it feels very easy to move, it is untied from its function. You have to go under that dash.....
I think the keyless remote is standard on the EX only because my regular model does not have that option either.
Locking the doors with the key activates the alarm system, while locking with the door button before closing the door does not.
WHen it has been key activated, I Must unlock from the driver side; if I unlock from the passenger side, it blows the alarm, and in fact then, sometimes it unlocks all doors, sometimes only the passenger door. There are numerous reports of freak behaviour with this and when I really want to get over it, I would peel the door open and use WD-40 all over in hope of restoring everything ..but to this date, I just live with it.

Thanks LMP! I appreciate your reply. I have heard that there were some problems with a sensor or something on the door locks. I called my local Kia dealer and they advised that this was a common problem and the repair was approximately $40.00. Also, as far as the cable for the vents, where exactly is it located and how difficult is it to get to? :banghead:

Like LMP said the heater control is cable operated and the cable is porbalby unclipped.

If you stick your head under the dash you will see a large white cam with the cable attached to it. Make sure the cable is clipped in to its holder properly.

ALso the alarm going off when unlocking the door is usually caused by a switch that is clipped to the door lock on the inside. Not a difficult change if you feel you can get the door panel off.
