Revell Renault R23

Heya folks,

I cross posted this over at F1M as well. Hopefully I won't be sent to purgatory by the moderators.

Been a member here for a good long time, but since now I've got a digital camera, I can finally start my own prgress thread and be a member of the community. So here goes.

So here's progress on my Revell 1/24 scale Renault R23. Whoo-boy...it's a project. It almost seems like Revell tries to model all the season' variations into one model instead of focusing on one race. So I chose a race (the German GP), and decided to do my best to make the model match that car.

Here's Pic 1: All I've done so far right is just some putting the body together, puttying the seams, and sanding the body for the primer. Here you can see how I've tried to thin out the kick-ups, and thin some material out from the exhaust shields.

Pic 2: Here's a rear shot with the suspension mocked up. Again you can see how I tried to thin the material around the exhaust and the kick-ups. You can't see it in this angle, but I also thinned the trailing edges of the lower wing element. Damn, Revell needs to lay off all the plastic.

Pic3: Like I said, it seemed Revell tried to model all the variation into one kit. Case in point, the sidepods. In original form, the kits sidepods were more angular. However, in the real car, the sidepods drop off and rounded right after the chimney. You can see my attempt at doing that with the kit.

Pic4: Here's a pic of the nose. I glued the lower and bottom parts of the chassis with the suspension in place. The using a microsaw, I cut the suspension arms out. I took this picture right after I rescribed the panel line for the nosecone.

Pic5: Front view. I have to fix that gap between the sidepod and the chassis floor.

Pic6: Top view. You can see how I waisted the sidepods a little more. Also, on the kit, the flugelhorns (besides being too thick), were also straight. However, on the real car, the kick-ups are curved inwards towards the front of the car, so I tried to duplicate that.

So, here we are. Any ideas, criticisms, and thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Pics ain't working for me which is a shame as I haven't seen this built yet and the Mild Seven blue and Renault yellow is a killer livery.

As much as I share your enthusiasm, I think it is a little early to get carried away with the form of the silver racers in your sig. :)

One suggestion: DON'T USE YELLOW DECALS. As you can see in my webpage, they are really bad.

Hey folks, here's my update on my Revell Renault R23. Haven't really done much except work on the front suspension. I mocked up the suspension, and then work on sanding and pinning the front upper a-arms. I mocked everything up using Elmer's White Glue. It's strong enough for what I need to do, but you can pull it apart easily and any residue can be peeled off.

Here's the first pic of me fitting the upper A-arm. When I glued the monococue together with the suspension, and then sawed the suspension, I didn't take into account the thickness of the saw. So I had to glued thin strips of styrene to the end of the a-arm and the sand it down. This is the result.

The next couple of pics show the model's stance. I was surprise by how right the ride height is, and I'm prefectly happy with it. The wheels are a spare set from a Sauber C22 that met a nasty end (damn cat) and the wheels I intend to use. For some reason, Revell including a set of BBS wheels which is totally incorrect. At least until I saw some publicity shots of the car (or show car). But for race spec, the R23 used OZ wheels in all GP's in 2003.

Here you can see I fixed that gap between the sidepods and the chassis pan. I just used a strip of styrene, some putty, and a lot of sanding.

Sorry for the long time between updates, but after a 12 hour work day at the dealership, modelling tends to be the last thing on my mind. Let me know what you think.

As far as my siggie...after the Bahrain GP...who knows. The teams just needs to give Kimi a car that will stay under him.
