I have a 87 ram 50 with a 2.6L. The check egr light came on.I have disconnected the battery and it still stays on.Truck is running fine. Can I put a plate to block off egr valve or will this hurt something?

How many miles on the truck? Back around that model year, they were bad about having the light to come on at different intervals (50,000, 75,000, 100,000, etc) to get you to take it to the dealer so they could reset the light and charge a fee for it. I had an 88 that did this. I finally had one mechanic tell me not to worry about it. I put a piece of black tape over the light. The light went off at 75,000 miles and came back on again at 100,000 miles.
