adding a snow plow to my 2001 1500 ram quad 4x4dss56 02-25-2006, 12:26 AM I called a few places today here in boston ma. to get some prices for a fisher snow plow minute mount. Both places told me truck not made for a plow front axel not beefy enough. I want a 7.5 ft. blade with the minute mount or a plow that is the same as the fisher setup. My question is has anyone had a plow setup on a 1500 quad ram 4x4 1/2 ton and what type/make. If i cant have one on my truck that means getting a newer truck. My truck has 53k miles and in great shape. I was told by the plow people that a GMC/Chevy is the best truck for a plow setup. Any comments appreciated thanks BleedDodge 02-25-2006, 01:24 AM A GM truck probably is better for plowing. The Dodge auto trans probably won't agree with the back and forth shifting. They are designed for car like ride, not strenght. I live in Montana, have a 99 1500 ram 4x4. Hve plowed since it was new. Only problem was track bar went bad, which was typical of that body style. The new style does not have that problam. Any way, once the part is replaced with atermarket, the problem is no longer an issue. I normally wouldn't reccomend anybody do alot of plowing with a 1/2 ton, but if you only plow a little and DO NOT LEAVE PLOW ON except to plow, Which is what I do, you should have no problams. My truck has held up very well, and I work it very hard. dss56 02-25-2006, 03:55 PM Both places i called said they would not do the plow install because of the front axel. Its a 2001 and i find it kinda hard to believe but they know more than me. I do not have the HD plow setup on the truck the tranny cooler and whatever else is needed. Im going to call Meyers and see if they have something for my truck. I was just going to plow my driveway and some local city plowing for my town for some extra bucks to pay for the plow. No Highway plowing no big plowing and was not going to drive around with plow on for any periods of time. If i cant get one then time to trade in and get a truck with a plow. IF the plow could be put on the truck one place wanted $3700+ for the plow and install for a fisher. I will find out next week about meyers plows install and prices if one can be put on the truck. thanks for all the replys tony36 02-25-2006, 07:45 PM You could always buy the snowplow from the warn or milemarker site or even costco which connects into a front reciever hitch, whitch only costs $150 for the receiver. I am not sure what your plow guys are thinking but I live in montana and probably 30% of the trucks here have plows, half of which are 1/2 tons, and more than half of those are dodges, like mine. Mine is 99 and I had a plow (meyer) on it since it was new. 2000mudder 02-26-2006, 01:18 AM they don't want to install it on your truck because of a liability issue with the 1/2 ton. buy it and install it yourself!!!!! tony36 02-26-2006, 01:58 AM dodge has a solid front axel, GM uses half shafts. I gaurantee a solid axel is the stronger of the two HEMIDAZE 02-27-2006, 07:24 PM My 03 1500 owners manual says DO NOT put a plow on it or you are in danger of setting off the air bags. crazys182003 02-27-2006, 08:34 PM I saw somewhere that they would install a plow on a standard cab but not on a quad cab. they mentioned soemthing about weight balance or soemthing. To me I would think a quad cab should be able to handle it I dunno. I got a standard 1500 but highly doubt I would mount a plow. marcbell 02-28-2006, 01:24 PM i have friend that has a fisher plow on a dodge caravan if you put a plow just be prepair to replace some front end parts has they weire out that i all marcbell 02-28-2006, 01:31 PM I saw somewhere that they would install a plow on a standard cab but not on a quad cab. they mentioned soemthing about weight balance or soemthing. The factory trans setting are set for a soft shift from R to D and back to R. This wears the clutches out really fast. I've seen technical articles that recommend installing a shift kit to firm up the transition from R to D so the clutches don't take so much abuse. It also makes it more convenient b/c the shift occurs almost instantly so you don't have to wait so long before taking off in the other direction. If you make a habit of stepping on the gas before the transition is complete, you will burn the clutches out on your first plow job.
