Diesel Will Not Star in "Fast 2"

By Guylaine Cadorette, Hollywood.com Staff

HOLLYWOOD, April 29, 2002 -- It looks as though Vin Diesel will not be reprising his role as Dominic Toretto in the sequel to The Fast and the Furious.

Universal Studios broke off talks with the action star late last week and said it will instead focus The Fast and the Furious 2 on Paul Walker's cop character, Brian O'Conner, Variety reports. Also absent from the sequel will be the film's original director, Rob Cohen, who would helm the pic only if Diesel were attached to star.

Stacey Snider, chairman for Universal Pictures, confirmed with Variety that the sequel would in fact go forward without Diesel and added: "We feel the brand of this film is attitude, cars and hip casting and that it is not dependent on star casting. We always allocate resources to extend brands, but this wasn't really on my creative radar because it's so hard to create sequels that are better than the original."

In The Fast and the Furious 2, Walker will reprise his role as a cop stripped of his badge who is recruited to infiltrate the Miami street-racing scene in order to redeem himself.

Money appears to be the reason that the talks with Diesel broke off. While Diesel made about $2.5 million for the original film, he reportedly started negotiations with a request that would have brought his salary to the $20 million range. Had a deal been made, it would have retroactively increased his salary for the Pitch Black sequel The Chronicles of Riddick to the same range. Diesel is currently collecting a cool $12.5 million to reprise his role as Riddick in the Universal project.

However, sources close to the actor maintain that Diesel backed out for purely creative reasons.

According to Variety, Universal believes Walker can carry the sequel without Diesel and will pay him a low- to mid-seven-figure salary for The Fast and the Furious 2. Shooting on the film is slated to begin in October.

Snider also told Variety that writers Michael Brandt and Derek Haas wrote modular stories for the sequel, one that could have gone with Diesel's character Dominic Toretto and one without him.

Following the surprise success of The Fast and the Furious, offers poured in for Diesel. This summer, he will star in Revolution Studio's XXX, directed by Cohen, and will appear alongside Dennis Hopper and John Malkovich in Knockaround Guys this fall.

Production is also good to go for The Chronicles of Riddick, which will shoot later this year. While Universal is still seeking to round out the cast, it recently added A Beautiful Mind scribe Akiva Goldsman to do a rewrite.

Walker, meanwhile, will star in the upcoming action/adventure Timeline by Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner.

There wasnt just an appearance of the skyline in the first one. It was owned and driven by one of the main 7 characters. It was a yellow r33 I believe. (I havent seen the movie too many times) Sure, It wasnt one of the main 3 cars in the movie, but it was up there.

I'm one of the people who hated it. But, I have a newfound respect for Walker after I found out that he owns one of the 3 Pagani Zonda C12s's in the US. Even though he was in that crap movie, he has good taste in cars.:D

I thought it was some race driver's car and it held some record on the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and they painted it yellow for the movie, but it was originally white. Or was I just horribly misinformed?

The Skyline in the movie was driven by the girl that played Vin's girlfriend. It was purple and you didn't see it too much.

your wrong Poly, The Skyline was the yellow car driven by the character "Leon"

The purple car was a 240SX.

I thought the purple car was an S14 Silvia (240SX?) driven by Vin's gf.

The yellow car was driven by that angry guy (Vince?) and was an R33 GTR Skyline.

Edit: Beaten to it lol.

If they want to create a better sequel, get rid of walker. I can't stand his "acting". Its so fake. Just like Ja Rule's acting :bloated: Vin was the only good actor in the whole movie. It is comical to watch walker try to use the "cool" words he uses and make an attempt at looking "hip"

Hopefully they do wise up and actually put a better plot to this one and do a little research about their topic before everyone on the internet picks it apart :D

this is just my opinion but i would use like a s2000 or the new lancer evo vii as the main car. those are 2 of my fav. cars.

MattyG
06-28-2002, 12:50 AM
EVO Lancer in it would be cool as......but I reckon the main car should be a mean black R34 GTR (with the veilside kit) or some such, maybe it could be the bad guys car.

Melt
06-28-2002, 01:21 AM
From what I hear Vin Diesel has a twin brother, they could try casting him.

Also that would be badass if an evo vii was the main car, although a R34 GTR would be cooler

Grendel
06-28-2002, 01:36 AM
I really doubt they would use an S2000 or Evo... they will probably use some other supercar that all the little riceboys only dream of owning (Supra, Skyline, etc)

:P I have to admit, I will probably go see TF&TF 2 just because... especially if there is a Skyline as the main star :D

-Grendel

The supra is P L A Y E D. They should use a skyline even though I think the evo vii is one BADASS car.

if you look in the back of the new SCC it's the cover car of the month. it's an R33 and it was used to set a Pikes Peak class record. It's owned by Sean Morris of Motorex and runs a 10.7 sec. 1/4 mile at 137mph on drag radials. there just a quick lesson on the skyline from F&F.

Okay first off the skyline r34 gtr that will most likely be in FnF2 is OWNED by paul walker....i read in a newspaper interview with im awhile back when the first one first came out and they asked what kind of car he had he said..(not exact wording..) "i own a nissan skyline its really amazing and the steering wheel is on the right side" or some shit like that..but thats close to what he said..

Oh and for all of you that hate the movie..open your eyes up you want it to be like a damn documentary that would be very boring ..the movie was made for hollywood for EVERYONE to enjoy not just certain people ..yah i can admitt that the dialouge sucked, not enough races, and they over used the term "NOS" ..but all in all its a holly wood made movie not a documentary..so quit tryin to bash the movie cuz if it sucks why did it do so well ?.

Your right YELLOWMARANELLO, the yellow R33 skyline is the one that holds a pikes peak record. It's owner nick-named it big bird. I dont understand why it wasnt raced in the movie considering it could have beat most everything, but I hope they do in the next. Is'nt Ja rule supposed to have a big part in the next one??

I hope not, the few lines he had did not make sense. He asked paul walker if the car he was standing next to was his and he acted like he was some wise almight race god.By the way he came in last so he should have learned how to race the car, not stand next to it.

that's a listing about the casting call for cars...

the car in the movie was the yellow r33... had a bit part as far as i'm concerned.

paul walker owns a silver skyline pushin around 600 hp.

craig lieberman (the guy who owned the supra from tftf 1) owns the blue skyline...

ahhhh hahahahahha... I SO agree with you on this one.
"You better learn that..." As he gets in his car and loses to the new guy.

One thing I didn't like... When Vin Diesal shifted into third gear, you hear a third gear chirp showing that he obviously gained traction from already putting the gear in and popping the clutch, then you see his foot put the clutch in again and press the gas. If I'm not mistaken, don't you put the clutch in BEFORE you shift gears? Who knows.

I think the story they have lined up should be shifted around completely. A racing movie shouldn't be a documentary but the facts should be straight and the story should have SOMETHING to do with racing. And why is Tyrese coming out? And why is he playing a badass? Did you guys see him in Baby Boy... His cousin in the movie plays a much better bad ass than him. All I have to do is think about that music video where he's singing in a shower, and I won't look at him as a bad ass again.

And Ja Rule's acting skills are in competition with that of a low budget porn "star". Murda I-N-C, needs to get an l-i-f-e.

Personally, I liked Paul Walker's acting in that movie, paired with Vin Diesal, the movie's lines were gold, for them at least. Michelle Rodriguez NOT coming out is purely crap, and that guy with the dreadlocks and the white RX-7 should come back, because his idea of hitting on chicks is freakin' hilarious.

I don't know about you guys, but I don't think those 18 inch rims, and coilovers could take that leap of faith number the Eclipse did when running from the cops. Even if it did, you would think it would show a missing front bumper, rearranged front axle and bent up exhaust system.

I'm just waiting to see how creative this movie is going to be. First movie, Asian guy in tight leapord-skin pants. Sequel, Tyrese in spandex? It's possible.

2)i think they should get rid of paul walker and get vin diessel back in there

3)i hope they have many more race scenes i f&tf2

4)i also think they should play up on hard to get cars(ex. porsches, vipers, ferraris, etc.)

5)i am 1 of the few people who like thed first fast and the furious but for the second one i hope it has a better story line but i think the new one might be good without vin diesel. . . . .NOT!!

6) i think vin diesel made the first movie all by himself

At first I was going to say everything is surrounded by Honda's and Acura's but you're right, they need Honda's and Acura's, coz the first movie was filled with Nissan, Toyota and one really weird Charger.
(900 hp and he's PROUD to hit 9 flat? And I've never seen a high powered rwd car that pops a wheelie WHILE it's peeling out, I've heard somewhere that that's not freakin' possible)

I think they need to show a little more to street racing, like the fact that street racers that have their heads on straight, race out in the country at really late times. They made the race scene out to be some party in an alley with an over-rated rap star, ethnicity divided groups and women so amazingly hot you wish you had a Del Sol with air cylinders to see if you can get a chick like that.

Plus the cars that were there were all show. Those kind of car's aren't at race meets. They need to have that one hatchback running on stock rims, with a tach and a carbon fiber hood that looks suspicious because it has rear disc brakes and big brembo cross drilled rotors in the front, but he swears it's stock.

They need to have that one Mustang owner that talks so much shit about Honda's you would swear his abusive father was a Honda owner.
that's just my opinion though.

Are you saying that like I'm wrong or are you saying that with sarcasm to support my statement?

I know that a high-powered rear wheel drive car has to gain traction and it pops a wheelie while it's pulling out of the hole. That's why the wheelie bar has um, wheels on it.

I hope you were using supportive sarcasm though, coz you have a pretty tight ride and i would hate for someone with a nice ride to not be knowledgable on such facts.

It was more of one of those I can't belive you haven't seen it before. I know like you said it can't happen on one of those common everyday occurenceses. But you never know. It's like it possible but once again the movie overexagerated with how mcuh smoke, lie would kinda have just chirp, not peel out all the way donw the road.

I think they should use old beat-up POS cars (the type you REALLY see racing on the streets), and get Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, Mark Hamil, Alicia Silverstone, Ice T, and a bunch of cult film actors in this thing. Throw Courtney Cox in there, too! Come on Universal, lets go out with a bang!

Oh well that's what I meant.

In reality, high powered RWD car's chirp but they gain traction and THEN wheelie. The Charger was peeling out like no tomorrow AND he was in a wheelie stance. That's just not possible.

I don't care what anyone says. If I hit a Semi at 120+ mph in a drag car. I wouldn't live. 5 point harnessing and a roll cage is not gonna save your ass when you're 40 feet in the air spinning around and you land upside down and roll 3 times.

Exactly! It would be funny as all shit! And since it has cross-over stars from other genres, it would earn the money that Universal thinks it won't.

Also, the stars would have to use real lingo. I would definitely pay $9.00 to see Mark Hamill say, "I 0wnz j00!" and Alicia Silverstone say, "W00t! W00t!"

Not only did he live, but he could walk, talk and drive off in a Supra. Damn what does he put in that milk he drinks.

Have you everwatched race cars/ rally cars get into accidents and flip and roll like 8 or 9 times??? the roll cage does protect you and if it protects rally drivers from 9 rollovers, why wouldn't it save the charger??

Race cars absorb impacts through their bodies... that is why they fall apart on impact. In a Charger, the only thing absorbing impact in Vin himself :(

Exactly... The body and frame aren't made to fall apart absorbing impact on a Charger.

I don't care how much of a bad ass vin was in Pitch Black, his ass shoulda been ground beef after that impact in the charger.

The rapid decelleration would have killed Vin just like it killed the late Dale Earnhardt. (R.I.P):(

And Earnhardt had tons of safety equipment in his car. He basically had everything except for the hans device. Im sure he had a better role cage than Vin's charger did.

Yes, apparantly when you stop accelerating from such a high speed instantly, your brain keeps moving regardless of the sudden stop of impact and crushes against your skull.

Very sad indeed that Dale died, more importantly because he was a good father and an honorable man rather than the fact that he won races.

Paul Walker was supposed to appear as if he were trying, remember, he was undercover and not one of the regulars, his acting is down to earth and normal, not fake. I agree, Ja Rule, is just not cut out to be an actor, atleast not in a movie like this.

They gotta have more normal looking cars at the street races, I would love to see like an 88-91 CRX or something to that effect in the next movie.

I wouldn't :)

I see enough of those on the streets and have no interest in seeing a 2 hour movie about them. A GT-R as the main car would definately be my top choice.

I never said I want the movie to be about them, or that they are in any of the races, it would just be cool if we saw them parked around the scene.

I think that Universal would be better off if they did it about the Minivan racing scene, you could have the Soccer mom in her all wheel drive supercharged Town & Country against the Turbocharged Honda Odyssey with the 120 shot. And the money car (skyline in 2) could be the Grace Southern Bell Rosewood Community Baptist Church 15 passenger with an 18 speed turbo Kenworth... A movie like that screams OSCARRRR

There actually were a few crxs in the first one. I know I saw a blue one in the first race scene that got busted, a white right hand drive one at race wars with blue graphics, and a yellow one also at race wars. Anyone have any other spottings of crxs?
