Single turbo question

Ive been doing some searching around on the net and i keep finding stuff on people wanted to do twin turbo conversions to thier na's. Im just wondering how hard it would be to slap a single turbo on something like my SL.....what would be needed ?

I also searched threw the faq too =P

My guess would be that you need the same stuff as the TT swap, just with headers for a single turbo.

hmmm....i think its gonna be easier to do a TT conversion. Kits are readily available and you can snag parts from a VR-4 or R/T TT. If im not mistaken theres costom fabrication involved in a single turbo kit for our cars. Hopefully someone will have more info for ya bro.

EDIT: now that i think about it, GT PRO on 3si has a single turbo setup...you may want to get it touch with him and ask whats involved.

It would need to be a completely custom job. Just like the TT conversion (there is no kit, but alot of parts can be taken directly from a vr4). With a single turbo setup, custom headers/exhaust manifolds will need to be fabricated.
Most everything else could be taken from the TT conversion list in the FAQ. ie, different ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, fuel management, possibly intercooler, possibly oil cooler, etc.

If you add turbo on NA 3000GTs, it will involve TT motor.
In either you go with single or twin, you need a TT motor.

Single Turbo give you relatively wide power band with big power.
This suit drag race most.

Twin set up give you little narrower power band and it is good for Top speed charange(Lage turbo) or track race (small to mid size turbo)

If you go with single, you will need to setup stand alone ECO. AEM MES, HKS F-con V-pro will do the job. Pit Road M scceeded in the single turbo with Greddy T88 single turbbo. GT Pro is probably doing the same set up.

You can add the turbo mani's and turbos directly to the NA motor. Its been done time and time again. There are some very fast cars running 10:1 compression TT setups. IPO ran all the way into the 11's on a 10:1 TT before a snafoo with a MBC caused destruction of the engine.

^ I think Hotshot's in the 11s now too, isn't he??? He's still running the 10:1 compression

Not that I know of. His sig say he ran a 9.0 @ 83.5 or something like that. (obivously 1/8th mile track  ) Last I checked the 11.8 by JB is the next fastest FWD person. Of course IPO has a whole crap load of times that beat JB's.

That is possible.
But how long would the NA 6G72 would last with boost pressure?
Not too long. TT motor swap is usually a safe way.

With tuning A LONG TIME. Mikes95RT has well over 30k miles on his 10:1 TT if I remember right. People always seem to think these engines arent strong but IPO proved otherwise with his set up. There are others with a lot of mileage on there 10:1 swaps.

Yeah, it's all about safe tuning. 10:1 compression + boost doesn't equal total destruction, it just means the margin of safety is smaller, and you need to be all the more cautious when tuning it. But there are plenty of people running single and twin turbo setups with NA compression ratios and boosting anywhere from 10-30+psi, it just has to be done safely.

hmmm...little out of my league in the technical end of this, so if i say somethin stupid, forgive me.
Wouldnt some low compression pistons solve the problem?

Solve what problem? Tuning is where its at on any compression. Thing is though on 10:1 10 psi is actaully more like 15 psi on 8:1. But like igovert said there is less room for error on 10:1 but if you do it right it wil run as long as any properly maintained 8:1 TT.

The only thing true that you said is that pitroad M has a single turbo car.

haha, i never ran at the track with my 18T's. My only time and the mods at the current time are in the sig. I'm not at 10:1 anymore, i'm at 8.5:1 when i find time to finish this rebuild.
