blazes9395 03-24-2006, 08:58 PM I agree with the MAF screen being there to help straighten the air flow, I beleive that is one of the amjor reasons its there. While I don't have a MAF as I have a '93 and a '95 CPI engine, I do have a camaro that utilizes the MAF sensor. I pulled the screens on my camaro - I wish I hadn't. Connecting the cars computer to watch real time values shows the MAF sensor having inconsistent eratic values that the computer has to compensate for. I blame the erratic values because of no screens to smooth out the air passing by the sensor. The throttle body mod, I am interested to hear what people have to say about it. Your idle RPM should not change - the VCM controls idle trim, and it should idle where it has always idled before. As for a lean cylinder problem, not true. While this was true with carburated engines, and even throttle body injection, the same cannot be said for the CSFI and even the CPI for the matter. The throttle body injected models were known to have lean cylinders especially the farther cylinders, 1&2 and 5&6. The air/ fuel mixture charge was taken more easily by the two middle opposing cylinders in these engines, its was a shorter route for the air/fuel charge to travel. As for the CSFI engines, this was eliminated by the introduction of an injector for each cylinder. Each cylinder gets the same amount of fuel for combustion as determined by various readings the VCM monitors. The CPI system is somewhat the same, with each cylinder getting its own fuel nozzle. I cannot see a lean conditin to exsist with these newer fuel delivery systems. As for having better response and power, yes I can see that - your getting more air in the engine, more air flow means more power. I really cannot see what the restrictor is there for. The only reason I can think of is to help lower emissions, by restricting higher air flow volume. Cloud Strife 03-24-2006, 09:12 PM Your explanation about the lean cylinders is what I was suspecting, but I have very limited car knowledge so I really couldn't comment. So if what you say is true, then a cold air intake would truely come in valuable if you did remove this restrictor plate. blazes9395 03-24-2006, 09:43 PM Your explanation about the lean cylinders is what I was suspecting, but I have very limited car knowledge so I really couldn't comment. So if what you say is true, then a cold air intake would truely come in valuable if you did remove this restrictor plate. A cold air intake will without a question help. The only drawback now is as fast as it comes in the engine, it still has to exit too. A good exhaust system with a good flowing muffler and mandrel bent tubing will make the intakes mods that much better. Marcinko 11-10-2006, 11:40 AM I will definately be doing this mod. Can anyone tell me if they have this mod done as well as the TPS mod? To refresh you memory it is the one where you drill the TPS and rotate to raise or lower the TPS voltage. I am wondering what the performance is like with both mods done. Thanks, Marcinko muzzy1maniac 11-10-2006, 12:45 PM do you have a link to the TPS mod? BlazerLT 11-10-2006, 12:58 PM do you have a link to the TPS mod? Don't start messing with that. TPS mods do nothing. muzzy1maniac 11-10-2006, 01:07 PM Don't start messing with that. TPS mods do nothing. Not sure I would have even attempted it. I was curious though. Marcinko 11-10-2006, 02:35 PM Do a quick search for TPS Mod and you find it. BlazerLt - I have done neither to my truck, but was curious if someone had and if so, what the outcome was. My thought was that it would be counter productive to both. It does sound as if consensus is the TB mod is worth the time and effort. I have been keeping track of my truck maintenance and fuel mileage with a program called Autowolf. So I have about 6 months of fuel mileage data. When I have done the mod and have substantial mileage history I'll post the results. (Pre -new engine and Post -new engine) If your curious my mileage before was 18MPG and after the engine change fell to 15MPG. If your interested in the program it can bee seen at http://www.lonewolf-software.com/automotivewolf.htm ZL1power69 11-10-2006, 06:46 PM The plate mod is worth the time but on the 96+ V6 you can't do the TPS mod cause there is not enough material on the sensor to drill out. even if it could be done, it would work against the plate mod. I did do it on my 95 and it did work. also my Grandfather did it on his 95 Mazda b4000 and it worked. but anyway, could we try to keep this thread on topic though. feel free to start a thread about the TPS in the performance section. Marcinko 11-10-2006, 08:11 PM Sorry, my intention was not to get anyone off topic. Rather want to know personally if the TB mod (on topic) was a good idea to combine with the TPS mod (off topic). Thanks for the input. I am sure now people who have done the TPS mod (off topic) will have some insite on whether to accomplish the TB mod (on topic) or not. Knowledge is power!!...right?? Thanks for the input. I am sure now people who have done the TPS mod (off topic) will have some insite on whether to accomplish the TB mod (on topic) or not. Knowledge is power!!...right?? the TPS mod works on some applications but can not be performed on the 96+ engine, so only the throttle plate mod can be done, not both. The throttle plate mod is worth the effort. Marcinko 11-10-2006, 08:33 PM Thanks ZL1---that was the answer I was looking for. I appreciate everyone's combined knowledge on this forum. Have a great weekend all!! TheBrettster 11-21-2006, 04:42 PM BEST MOD I'VE DONE. PERSONALLY. I drive my truck a little hard and now the engine doesn't sound like is struggling at all. Engine never passes 3k rpms anymore. Cloud Strife 11-21-2006, 05:40 PM This is on my to do list next week when I replace all my gaskets on the engine. agcneo 11-23-2006, 03:02 PM i did the mod, and it sounds simple. but honestly it seems like a loss of power, it hesitates now untill it hits higher rpms. did i do something wrong??! i have only put 50 miles on since i did it. do i have to wait for the long term memory in the ecu to reprogram itself? ZL1power69 11-23-2006, 03:10 PM i did the mod, and it sounds simple. but honestly it seems like a loss of power, it hesitates now untill it hits higher rpms. did i do something wrong??! i have only put 50 miles on since i did it. do i have to wait for the long term memory in the ecu to reprogram itself? the only thing u can do wrong is to mess with the hole and rivits in the plate. if you just ground the half moon shaped piece off, you should not notice a loss of power. the computer will relearn fairly quickly but when i did the mod, i reset the computer with a scan tool. BlazerLT 11-25-2006, 04:04 AM A scantool won't reset the computer, it will only clear the codes. This is a problem with this mod and is why the deflector is there in the first place, it will stop the rush of air coming into the engine which screws up the MAP readings. agcneo 11-26-2006, 08:57 AM so am i better off putting a new throttle plate back on? the computer seemed to relearn it, and it does have pickup, but my idle is a tad bit higher, and it still hesitates. but when it goes, it goes! ZL1power69 11-26-2006, 09:57 AM this mod should not cause the engine to hesitate and idle should not change unless you messed with the hole in the plate or the rivits. BlazerLT 11-26-2006, 07:13 PM It has been known to cause a hesitation seeing the deflector place is there to stop the initial air gush coming in which will screwup the map sensor reading. ZL1power69 11-26-2006, 09:52 PM what map sensor are u talking about? the 96+ just uses MAF so readings would not be affected by the mod. i havent had any problems after performing the mod. agcneo 11-27-2006, 11:16 AM all i did was take that plate and grind it away. is it possible that there is turbulant airflow cause by this somehow, that that is causin the hesitaion?? i didnt touch any rivets, or the idle hole. maybe i should have mentionedim running a full K&n with spacer on it.does that help any BlazerLT 11-27-2006, 07:55 PM Remove the TBI Spacer, doesn't do a thing. blazes9395 11-27-2006, 08:25 PM all i did was take that plate and grind it away. is it possible that there is turbulant airflow cause by this somehow, that that is causin the hesitaion?? i didnt touch any rivets, or the idle hole. So what did you do with the riviet holes, is there something in place of them? old_master 11-27-2006, 09:33 PM Just to clarify earlier posts in this thread... The OBDII equipped 4.3L engines use both a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. Although MAP sensor readings will not be affected by performing this modification, MAF readings can and will be skewed. agcneo 11-29-2006, 05:51 AM the rivets are still there, not moved, not touched, i just ground off the half moon peice. should i rip all that out and replace the rivets. sorry im makin this simple mod sound so friggen retarted and hard. and the spacer is off now. BlazerLT 11-29-2006, 07:01 AM Just to clarify earlier posts in this thread... The OBDII equipped 4.3L engines use both a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. Although MAP sensor readings will not be affected by performing this modification, MAF readings can and will be skewed. Yes, the MAP will be affected when you get the sudden intake without the plate in place. That is why it is there. You will get a change from both sensors which will cause the hesitation. TheBrettster 11-29-2006, 02:41 PM BlazerLT - I should remove my TB Spacer as well ? Even if i'm putting an after market intake on ? BlazerLT 11-29-2006, 03:49 PM Yes, remove it. TBI spacers do nothing and have in some cases been proven to actually reduce horsepower. TheBrettster 11-29-2006, 07:43 PM There went 100 bucks. BlazerLT 11-30-2006, 09:34 PM Best to do some research before the purchase. :D TheBrettster 11-30-2006, 09:57 PM Well it was before i had it and i think ESLHockey said he put one on his truck so i thought all what the hell. BlazerLT 12-01-2006, 12:25 AM Well it was before i had it and i think ESLHockey said he put one on his truck so i thought all what the hell. Don't be a blind man following a blind man. ;) TheBrettster 12-01-2006, 12:32 AM HAHAHAHAH , well thats the last blind man i'm following. jackpot5283 09-04-2007, 04:42 PM fact is # your rpm to speed wont change no matter what engine mods you make. if it was better to have the throttle plate an inch or two farther out gm would have figured it out after $xxxxxxx dollars not some goof with a 2 inch piece of aluminum.
