okay, i searched and it just hasn't given me a good explanation. What exactly is underdriving? I was looking at unorthodox pulleys (even though they don't make pulleys for my engine :grinno: ) and am in need of a good explanation. Is it when you run more accessories off less amount of belts or what? Thanks guys.

Also, is there a company that does make pulleys for the ka-e?

i'm not sure but I think they put bigger pully (or something of the sort) on the less important systems
so its easier for the engine to turn, making more power

i'm not sure though

I remember hearing that it affects how well your useless stuff like air conditioning works

underdrive pullies. If I'm correct, the pullies are smaller so the pullies take less effort to turn, therefore freeing up a little horsepower. I think they also make specific pully kits so that if you want to eliminate power steering OR A/C they'll give you only the pullies that'll run one without the other.

Arent light weight pullies bad?. I think I've read somewhere about it messing up the harmonic balancer, which damages the engine. Anyone else hear this?

I don't know about that. I mean, if lightweight pullies are bad, then not having any belts on would be just as bad, I've been without power steering and A/C belts for months now.

The bad pulley is the one that replaces the crank pulley cause then you remove the harmonic balancer which puts the whole engine off.

yeah, underdriving is just replacing the pullies on things like the alt, power steering and a/c, to free up a few hp, wouldnt recommend underdriving the alternator if you have a good system though, could end up going through batteries like a $2 whore goes through pregnancy tests

ok underdriving is making your accessory pullies smaller, so they drive slower, freeing up hp. its not bad unless, like stated, you have a system and your alternator cant handle it. otherwise the only downside would be maybe your power steering will be a little stiffer, or your A/C wont be quite as cold. most 4 cylinder cars dont have a harmonic balancer so theres nothing to mess up. its just a mislabel taken from older v8s who have a weighted crank pulley to help externally balance the motor. putting a lighter smaller crank pulley will underdrive all accessories with almost no downsides, the only thing is youll have to get smaller belts.

so its safe to replace the crank pulley as well on our 4 cylinders right? i thought about picking up a pulley set, but can't seem to find any retailers that sell them for my ka24e, will the de pulleys fit my car or is that a dumb question?? And i know i'm gonna get flamed for this, but i see pulley sets for sale on ebay....:licka: flame away.....comments?

DE shouldnt fit, id just get one off ebay. and hey, if it breaks or something it was only 30 bucks

bad thing about ebay is no documents or anything with products (normally). All i can find are crank pulleys, but what size belt would i need after i installed the new crank pulley?? Is there a formula for figuring out when my new belt size should be for each belt?

it depends on the size of the pulley, which depends on the manufacturer. the best thing to do is either contact the buyer, or bring your old belt in and guess close, then tension the new one up. if unorthodox or even probably OBX has one for your car, they will probably send the sizes of the new belts you need to get. otherwise just guess close

just to clarify, the only pully that is smaller is the crank, the others are actually larger, making them turn slower:wink:

ok yeah thats what i meant sorry for the confusion

yeah, what they said, the crank pulley will be smaller, and the acc. pulleys will be larger, and if you buy from a reputable source, who actually design the pulleys properly, your belts should remain the same size. getting them custom sized can be the suck.

but for the KA motors, they usually only sell the crank pulley. i havent seen any accessory pullies, unless somehow the SR accessory pulleys are the same...not sure
