Igor, I'm very curious as to who'll be driving the second car, especially as -having seen what the big boys are planning for ought-six - I know that a hired gun will be a necessity to keep the team's hopes alive.

Archer and Autohaus are now factory Mopar. Caddy has girded up with Pratt & Miller's full weight. There'll be Aston Martin DBRS9's and even a Ford GT with Sammy Hagar's pockets behind it.

I want to see you do well, Igor, I really do, but this isn't a time attack against street tuners. This is SCCA Pro at its most cutthroat since the days of the Kendall/Schroeder Mustangs and Fellows/Sharp/Baldwin Camaros in Trans-Am. If Autosport and their factory Volvos couldn't catch a break in Speed World Challenge against these guys, where will that put Automotive Forums with our 5 year old out-of-production Japanese coupe?

I don't know... I just figured that if it can still win its class at Nurburgring 24 hours the car's got to have something left in it.

Wholly different race under wholly different circumstances. Sprint races allow cars to run full rich without fuel economy worries or much fear of driveline breakage. Big power cars like the Viper and Corvette don't worry as much about tire wear, either.

The Nurburgring 24 is a testament to the bulletproof durability of the R34 GTR N1, and Mid-Ohio is a course very similar in spirit to the 'Ring, so the car may handle that track well.

However, I stand by my assessment that we at Automotive Forums are severely outgunned in this endeavour.

We can only do our best.

And I'll be cheering for you guys as well. Heck, I've crewed race cars before (short track open wheel, mostly) and have experience in setup, construction, maintenance, and testing.

If I'd thought you'd take the offer, I'd throw my hat in the ring to crew the Skyline, just to prove myself wrong. But that's pretty ludicrous.

However, right now I can only point out what I observe from my other role in motorsport; as a statiscian, journalist, and historian.

Hey guys are you being allowed to keep ur All Wheel Drive?? If this car is anywhere near the build avail to the JGTC cars.... its all going to be on the driver... I saw the JGTC 500 horsepower "limited" 350z in California... and saw the GT300 class cars KILL the Viper that was "allowed" to race. You guys are bringing to the table EXACTLY what this car over 15 years ago was intented...kill the competition on a road course... GTR was never MENT to be a drag racer.. I'm thinking once Igor understands the chess match happening on the track, and Sean and the boys keep the oil where it needs to be IE- rod bearings!-ugh! LOL. Sean did you get to "steal" the idea of the oil pick up from the gt500 motor you pulled apart??
This car is going to be the biggest thing to happen to american road racing since the tire...lol. You guys need help in the pits and I'll send Scott-Joule and his knowledge to you... I've road raced motorcycles most my life, so I'll be forced to stay at the shop and keep the parts comin in and out, and make sure the techs don't stand around jerkin off....LOL.

Speed World Challenge has no rule disallowing AWD, R33BusaMan. However, only the Audi RS6 has been able to employ AWD with any success on track.

The JGTC is hardly a gauge of production-based sports car racing. Serious road racing fans refer to it as "Japan's NASCAR" for good reason. It is highly unlikely that this Skyline GTR will "kill" the factory Autohaus Viper driven by Tommy Archer (you know, 2 time SWC GT champion and American Viper expert Tommy Archer).

I do think that the Woodhouse and McCann Viper teams will have a look back over their shoulders at this car, as will Stu Hayner's GTO and the new Aston Martin DBSR9's. However, factory teams like Autohaus or the Pratt&Miller Caddys are a whole different animal.

The cars are N1 ex- Super Taikyu cars. Nothing at all like GT500 or GT300 cars. GT500 cars are mostly tube frame ,carbon fiber bodied cars. Not much of the stock cars left.

The cars we are running are very close to a street car. The motor I took apart with the swining oil pickup was one of the Super Taikyu engines. One of the engines from these cars. The engines we are running are Nismo built and Nismo tuned.

ESPN is owned by ABC not Turner and both Speed WC and Speed Touring class of races are shown exclusively on Speed TV as they are the major sponsor of both series so if you dont have Speed TV, make sure you got it by March 12th.

Igor/Sean give them hell. Its time for a JDM to show the domestic crowd a thing or too. The mere presence of that car will give some of the "big boys" doubts. I dont care if you are in a vette, caddy or viper. They know what the car can do. You got my support.

Igor, congrats on your achievement to have the car ready for this series. Although the GTR is out of production currently and will not receive Factory Support, the wealth of experience and know-how about this car is still there to make it a winner. Plus lets face it, the parts to make this car a winner is available. I don't know much about the class you are entering so tell us more about it and what the rules are. You will have a car with 500 HP and maybe more torque, plus a 4WD system and the best braking sponsor you can find. Specifially, what modifications can be done to a car in this class?

I seriously doubt the Nissan will be much of a contender. Yes, once it's got enough horses it's fast, but the Dodge Viper and Corvette are both born-and-bred racers. We shall see.

It is my understanding that the Ford GT program will be delayed until 2007.

Seriously, it's a shame if KSS and Jonsson can't get that car to the grid in time for '07, but considering I've heard from Hollfelder that they tried to get a GT onto the grid and Ford flat out told them "No", that KSS's program has come this far is a fair accomplishment.

Dont forget - the smallest displacement motor. 2568 cc. The Volvos were 2580, but I dont think we will see them this year. I think the next smallest motor is about a liter bigger.

Hummm.... guess the road series in Australia changing the rules to eliminate the GTR in the 90's is a better gauge of the ability of what the GTR can do against v-8's..... or better yet a big overweight front plowing v-10.... I think they just MIGHT be getting "factory" support if the high number(over 8!) of NISMO motors they have at their disposal..... I am thinking "borrowing" a driver from Japan would be PERFECT for a 2nd driver... someone with a past in the GTR... If I was 20 years old and the had the opportunity to have a seasoned driver with a winning past in the GTR come over and show me what it takes to make MY car win... and win big.. I'd think I was living a dream...... When I started my in the 600cc class on my GSXR road bike, I had a VERY experienced pro rider come out to the track and spent the day with me.... I learned more in 6 hours on the track that day than all my past races! I moved up over 6 spots in the standing in 2 weeks...

Wow Igor, amazing job. It must be tough competing against all these crazy cars for a first timer(from what I read). The GT-R can offer everything you need to leave the competition in the dust. Unfortunately Igor placed 27th out of 30 cars during the first practice session. (Technically he placed 27th out of 29 since the last place finisher didn't make it to the track). Practice session #2 starts at 4:40pm EST, hopefully Igor will do better this afternoon.

Igor placed 26th out of 30 cars (or 28 cars since 2 cars didn't make it to the track) during the 2nd practice session.

His best lap time was 2:19:776 @ an average of 95.295mph.

Maybe he'll do better during qualifying tomorrow.

Just gotta support it no matter what. It's a learning experience this early on and though the times might not be the best, it's another step up the ladder of getting better. Best of luck to you guys tomorrow

Reese earns pole for SCCA SPEED GT round one race at Sebring

SEBRING, Fla. -- Leighton Reese, of Minnetonka, Minn., took the SCCA Pro Racing (http://www.whowon.com/sresults.asp?SanctionID=243&StoryID=178035#) SPEED World Challenge GT pole Thursday, running a 2:08.764 (103.445 mph) in his No. 6 Banner Engineering Chevrolet Corvette C6 and setting a new SPEED GT Sebring qualifying record in the process. Mike McCann, of North Canton, Ohio, will start second alongside Reese, and Tommy Archer, of Duluth, Minn. qualified third for the Round One race, which will run as part of the 54th Annual Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring.

After taking the top spot in the combined practice sessions Wednesday, Reese appeared stronger still Thursday, blistering the 3.7-mile, 17-turn road course to earn his third pole of the past two seasons and give Chevrolet the first qualifying point of the year in the SPEED GT Manufacturers’ Championship Presented by RACER Magazine.

“Well, it’s a good thing we came in and did the test day, because we were a mess the first couple of sessions,” Reese said. “We found a good balance on the car, and the car has basically been a top-four machine ever since then.”

“I’ve got to hand it to my crew chief. He has just been relentless on the car’s chassis. He is forever checking things and working until 11 at night. This is a game of details and he covers all of them. We’ve been on the pole a number of times over the past two years, and I need to convert one of these.”

McCann, the 2004 SPEED GT Rookie of the Year, was third during the early part of the 20-min. qualifying session before posting a 2:08.926 (103.315 mph) near the halfway point in his No. 82 McCann Plastics/K&N Filters Dodge Viper.

Tommy Archer, of Duluth, Minn., appeared to have a handle on the front-row, outside slot in his No. 5 c3controls/Autohaus Dodge SRT Viper until McCann slipped past him. Starting third in Friday’s race, however, still gives Archer a solid chance to defend his 2005 win at Sebring.

Lou Gigliotti, of Dallas, Texas, put two Corvettes in the first two rows by qualifying fourth in his No. 28 LG Pro Long Tube Headers Chevrolet Corvette C6, while reigning SPEED GT Drivers’ Champion Andy Pilgrim, of Boca Raton, Fla., will start fifth in the No. 1 XM/Mobil 1/Motorola/On Star Cadillac CTS-V.

The SCCA SPEED GT race, part of the 54th Annual Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, is scheduled for 4:50 p.m. Friday.

i was watching the race on the Speed Channel, rooting for Caddy of course.....i was looking for the GTR though, i heard about it awhile back and was really excited to see how it would do, there was NO COVERAGE AT ALL of the GTR after they did a short 4 sec clip from the on-board cam.

they didnt even interview the team, hopefully that'll change for the 2nd race.

Yeah, I saw that too... you also saw the GTR in the warm up lap when they were going through the line up of drivers on the grid. That was the only TV time the car got.

If you were actually looking at the results you would have noticed that everyone above and below Igor had also retired during the race. he didn't finish but since he finished more laps than the other 23-30 finishers he gets a better position in the final standings. But if you look higher in the standings you can see Lou Gilotti who was first through most of the race and then blew up and retired.

The AutomotiveForums.Com Race Team collected 2 points at Sebring. It was only a small issue that caused the mechanical black flag that brought the car in for the remainder of the race. Everything will be good to go for the next race at St. Petersburg. We'll see how the car does on the smaller street course.

Way too much despair with the results guys and girls. :nono:

I was at Sebring with the team. Considering how many logistical and technical problems this rookie team had to overcome, I think they should be congradulated on their debut. As far as I know, the AF team is the first rookie to have made it to the series for the opening race, most don't meat the deadlines and end up entering mid-season. Moreover, it would have been silly to expect a stunning performance from the start, considering that the next few races will be used primarily to figure out the right set up for the car to mach the competition. I won't be surprised if they petition SCCA for some neccessary changes to the vehicle.

True Igor and the crew did a great job getting there and making it there ready to race. I was at the pre-race inspection and talked to Igor soon afterward. You could tell he was very excited for this race.
I haven't seen anyone ask about the suspension set-up. I was at turn 3 and everytime he came out of the turn he was bouncing all around. When I stopped seeing the 69 car come around I wonered if that had anything to do with it.
Either way, good luck at the next race. If you guys make it out to Road Atlanta later on I may see you there.

how similar is the race car to the R34 street car? i know the C6's, Caddy's, and the Porsches all started life pretty much as street cars. where as the Viper's are bought as Competition Coupes.

also, i've noticed that the AWD cars of the past (and coincidentally turbocharged cars) have dropped out after a season or two (Volvo and Audi).

do you think the R34 can even be competetive with the top cars? those Corvettes and Vipers are pretty insane this year.....

can you give us any details about the engine, chassis, tires, or anything else? i'm guessing it's probably pushing 500hp or more with torque at 460+ ft-lbs.....but how much does it weigh?

No doubt they didn't do a great job, trust me I've been routing for them all along. Just trying to help keep the info straight.

I personally called Igor two days before the race to wish him luck. He's a good guy... way down to Earth... a cool cat. We went to some sushi resturant down by his house not too long ago, he bought me dinner... so techinically AF bought me dinner... AF rocks.

Don't worry about the car's setup. If you can see it, its already been noted. There are only so many adjustments that can be made before a race. The driver needs to be comfortable in the car. You don't want to risk going too far and then have the driver stuck out in a race with an unreasonable car.

As for the other cars in the series... you can go to the World Challenge website and view the VTS sheets for all the competitors. The Caddys get such mods as the firewall pushed back 9cm and the motor set back that far as well. The driver's seat is set back into what was once the back seat of the Caddy. The transmission is also mounted on its side in the transmission tunnel for fitment purposes.

You can view the VTS sheet for the GT-R as well. It will tell you that the motor is stock. It has stock N1 turbos, stock manifolds, even the stock airbox. Its minimum weight is listed as 3200lbs with driver. The heaviest car along with the Caddies.

The series uses a spec tire. They are shaved Toyo RA1s. Every team gets their tires from the same source, Vilven.

I know you want to hear from Igor, but it might be awhile before he gets to sit down in front of a computer. You might have to wait until after the Long Beach race in April to hear from him. Its a tight schedule for the next few weeks. There is a bit of a break between races after Long Beach. At that time the whole team will be back together in LA.

All the Dromo boys were rooting for the AF team....we'll see ya in long beach!

Hello everyone, let me introduce my self first. My name is Jack and I'm 28 years old. I used to owe a R32 Skyline GTR when I studied in Bangkok for 2 years. Now I'm back home to Norway with no Skyline :frown: I had to sell the car before I moved back. I've been looking for one in Norway as well but the car is still too expensive coz of our high taxation and insurance rate + aftermarket parts would be too hard to come by.

Anyway let me introduse you to my first topic. I've been following the Skyline a little bit at the World Challange. The Skyline seems to be running not so well with technical issue after another but I'm still excited and hope for the best. Now what I do not accept is wannabes making fun of the car without really know what's happening. I don't mean to bother much but if you guys here can sign up in the forum and tell those hillbillies what is really going on with the Skyline at the World Challange.

Look Jack, they're hardly "making fun" of the Skyline. The fact of the matter is that Igor didn't appear at Sears Point, and didn't make it on track for the race at Mid-Ohio after turning qualifying laps that would've put him caboose on the Touring Car field.

From the SCCA's scoring and timing charts, we can see that Igor's fastest lap in practice for Mid-Ohio was a full 19 seconds quicker than his qualifying time. That indicates a CATASTROPHIC failure in the car, probably engine or driveline.

It's also obviously a difficult and expensive to repair problem as Sears Point is damn near a home race for the GTR. The AF Gang was nowhere on the entry list.

I'm afraid that the AutomotiveForums.com Skyline GTR came, saw, and was conquered by the World Challenge's Vipers, Vettes, and Porsches. I do hope that Igor and the gang will be back on track, and that 'Ol Godzilla will have his day in the sun with a run in the top ten.

But realistically speaking, it's probably all optimism at this point. It's too far to climb from too low a perch.

Dont you have another Super Taikyu R34 to use as a back up?

All my R34 needs to be competitive in the Super Taikyu class is weight reduction and a roll cage. I offered my R34 to the AF team, but I haven't got an affirmative response yet.

I was talking to Sean, sorry. :) I thought Igor purschased a second Super Taikyu R34 for a second driver? So couldnt he use that car as his backup car to continue the rest of the season? Whether or not they are going for points, it would probably be a worth while idea just to get experience at the tracks competing against the other cars in the series.

Too bad Nissan doesn't export the Skyline. I heard that in the past criminal elements in Australia bought and imported Skylines to outrun the police. The police, in turn, bought and commissioned Skylines to keep up with the criminals. The power and handling on the Skyline is incredible.

I hope you meant "too bad Nissan didn't export the Skyline," as now America does have it's very own Skyline, just like everyone else. :) (No, I'm not talking about the Infiniti G, which was called Skyline in Japan).
