87 Toyota Timing Belt

:banghead: I have installed a new timing belt on a 2S-E motor. The belt install has two tensions (Haynes repair manual). The front side: from the camshaft to the water pump to #2 idler pulley to the crankshaft should have "moderate tension". The back side: from the camshaft to #1 idler pulley to the oil pump and over to the crankshaft should have full tension. I tried put full tension by using the spring adjustment on #1 idler pulley...this works fine, but the front side has too much play in the belt. I do not understand the term "moderate tension". Please respond...I need a lot of help. Thanks, Bill

Having installed Toy. tmming belts in the past I think the idea of full tension and moderate tension are hard to follow. I think they say this so you get the belt on the right notches. Try rotating the engine a couple times by hand and see how it is then. Iv'e done it by guess and gosh and never had a problem. You shoun't really have to ajust the tension because it was okay for the old belt when new.

As augie7071 said, rotate the crankshaft a couple of revolutions by hand clockwise and check the timing marks on the cam pulley and crank pulley. If they are correct, you are good. You will find there is significant tension on the front part of the belt once you have done this and the tensioner has had a chance to tighten the belt on its own. Rotating the crankshaft distributes the tension of the tensioner pulley around the entire length of the belt.
