To replicate car I am building I am using an old Esci kit I bought back when it was actually on the shelves in the model shops. Plans at that stage were to build the car I am now doing. I believe it is also the release that Revell has recently put out. The old Esci kits used a very soft plastic compared to what everyone is used to. It is also set up to be motorized:banghead: , so has very limited chassis detail. I have stolen the seat and driver figure from the Tamiya version to add a bit of colour to the interior. I have not used the Tamiya kit as the body style is different.

Still need to add the driver, belts, steering wheel, gear lever and fire extinguisher.

Bit further with the build. I have used about 1.6mtrs of pinstriping already and still have more to go. This works out at about 38 real car metres! Every photo I have of the car competing shows different variations of striping. The car I am building I have actually not done some striping as it detracts from the cars look(not just to keep a little bit of sanity).
The car at the moment is very static prone. This means I can clean the car, move it outside and it has already attracted dust particles.
I need help taking good photos of shiny black cars. Either camera darkens the shot in natural light or uses flash and washes it out. GGRR give me my old print camera and would have no worries.

Mal, just wonder are you making the 82 JPS-livery BMW 318i Gr.5?

Ravaglia, sorry that I haven't answered you before. You are correct. I am using this as a test seeing as I want to build the GrpA 635 car sometime soon. I also have the first steps of a Crp C Commodore done that requires a 635 donor kit which then leaves me with a spare body to play around trying to get the flared Grp C BMW 635 right. I must be a sucker for punishment.:banghead:

I have now finished this car. If I built this again I would actually use both the Esci/Revell kit and the Tamiya kit. The front of the Esci kit and the rear of the Tamiya kit would need to be grafted together to better represent this car. I used the Reji PE set for their BMW 3.5 CSL and the Scale Production PE set for the Tamiya kit. The rear spoiler supports and wing ends, were used as well as the refueling vents from the SP set, and the windsceen wiper, seat belts and BMW hood badge from the Reji set. As I also have the Tamiya version, the rest will be put to use.

I still hate taking photos of shiny black cars. Too many reflecting highlights.

Thanks for your answer. Have you got any photos of the actual car? Also was this car driven by Ravaglia? If not by who?

That looks STUNNING! The decals look ace. Ehere did you get them? I have a thing for the JPS livery. Just something about black and gold that sticks out from the rest.

Thanks for your comments guys.

Bobble83 you can buy the decals for this from www.modelcraftsandhobbies.co.nz They are made by Roodecals, however have been out of print for a few years. I picked up a second set from them only 2 weeks ago.

Ravaglia The official Aussie BMW team originally ran the car in 1980 in Craven Mild colours then in 1981 in JPS colours for Allan Grice. In 1982 Jim Richards was signed with the team and he drove it almost exclusively from then on. The car was rebuilt in 1984 for the WEC at Sandown and Jim drove it with Tony Longhurst. Can not remember what happened to the car after that.
Here is a photo printed in Raceyear 1983. Photo by Formula Photography.

There are also shots in 'The Jim Richards Story', ' Australian Motor Racing Year 11, 12 and 13.

Thanks for the info. The reason I asked was becasue I also found a picture from FPM Modelcars (Germany) of the JPS livery 320 Gr.5 with Ravaglia's name on it (car no.11), and it says it was from 82.

wow, did this ever turn out great. i love the livery and the display base. i like that you have a driver in there too. i can just imagine that static problem drove you crazy but i think you did a great job on a good looking car.

Fantastic work, I am trying to do a super detailed version of the Revell re-issue, and was wondering if you still have the original Esci decal sheet (McLaren BMW), and if so, how much would you want for it?.
