View Full Version : Welded Diff Review. Welded Diff Review. R.W.240 02-06-2006, 08:17 PM I had a friend at a local shop - www.boostlogic.com - TIG weld it for me. all 4 corners on the spider are welded and 3 of the spiders are welded to the carrier. This thing is a fucking tank compared to some of the other ones I've seen so I'm not expecting any problems. Under 20mph is the only time you'll notice it. It chirps on full lock parking lot maneuvers and bucks around wider corners. This isnt really problematic since any clutch diff locked enough for wide tires will do the same thing (while accelerating/decelerating). With the solid subframe bushings I can hear the backlash in the driveshaft more but again, I don't autocross so I can give a shit about my car in a parking lot. Over 20 you'll never notice its back there daily driving. feels exactly the same. Now the fun part since I get to say FUCK A VLSD. Once you get on power with this thing its so much more consistant and controllable to get the rear end out than with VLSD. Again, this diff is so controllable its obscene. with welded you power over and the rear end comes around with the gas. With a VLSD you get on if and one wheel starts spinning and then maybe the other catches up. In a straight line I no longer spin second. I've yet to drive it hard enough to feel the entry understeer though so I'll get back with more info after the 17th. In conclusion: I'm really interested in what a true diff will be like now so the welded wont be sticking around for too long. but for people that can't afford at good clutch type this thing totally reams a VLSD in its ass hole. TatII 02-06-2006, 08:23 PM one of my buddy's KA-T had a welded diff and its one of hte scariest cars i've ever sat in. on uneven roads, the car would wander all over the place, and when its alittle wet on the highway, with all the bumps we have here in nyc, the back end always felt like it wanted to kick out. and yes doing a u turn on a street is pure comedy since its always skipping and chirpping. TatII 02-06-2006, 10:17 PM yeah i had a similar problem with my steering and it turned out to be that i was low on power steering fluid. and nobody else noticed the whinning sound but me. it was annoying me casue i thought the belt was on too tight and whatnot and it was driving me nuts. then it turned out to be such a stupid thing. R.W.240 02-06-2006, 10:18 PM my vlsd never has these problems you speak of, that thing ALWAYS is spinning both wheels, they do wear out, maybe you have a shitty one that is no better than an open diff lol Your on stock motor and tires. Obviously its not perfect for 20$. But it gets the job done 90% as well as a clutch type. If its good enough for JGTC cars its good enough for me. orestes 02-06-2006, 11:06 PM do you have an alternate mode of transportation? Pavlo 02-06-2006, 11:15 PM A friend of mine was trippin' balls when he drove some one's mustang with a welded. I guess you need to know how to controll a RWD car really good before you get a welded diff. And power steering whine is pretty common to a lot of older cars. For my dad's old sentra changing the fluid completely fixed it, for some it is just adding fluid though. It personally bothers me, I would do anything in my power to fix it. 57r337.Dr1f73r 02-07-2006, 02:01 AM TIG welding is crazy awsome, I wish I could TIG but I guess i'll just have to settle with MIG cuz TIG is crazy hard. Prolly around spring break i'll weld mine, i've got a friend with a welded in his hachi and he says its awsome cept when he has a chick in the back cuz its noisy as hell. I'm still kinda hyper cuz I smoked my friend in his new "Badass Scion tc" on his "home ground" lol. :grinyes: I let him ride in the 240 back down the road and it was great watching him grab for a ooh shit bar. R.W.240 02-07-2006, 02:24 AM do you have an alternate mode of transportation? These fucking rich bastards have no respect for the car (especially cause they are mostly automatic lol). Skylindrftr 02-08-2006, 01:16 AM Yeah there is a 911 (996) on my street that is auto, that is fucking retarded, if you are gonna buy a porshe, esp a higher end one, you should get manual or nothing, im suprised porshe even offers it in auto...i guess the auto ones are kinda chick cars lol like boxters (the ones i see are mostly auto) Related Links Participate in thousands of discussions at AutomotiveForums.com!
