CV joint (half shaft) disassemble???Tamango 02-05-2006, 02:48 AM Hello all :) (95 lx,2dr,manual) I've removed the half shaft from the tranny. How do I take apart the outer CV joint from the shaft (bar)? Here is a site I've found, http://www.gmcmotorhome.com/tech/axle/ , im stuck on the 3rd pic. He took out the shaft, I have removed the clip from the shaft that goes into the bearings. However, there is another clp on the shaft within the bearings, I can't get to it. I think it's the same clip as when you pry out of the tranny. If this makes sense, please help, if not, it's 2:45am :uhoh: rhynes 02-05-2006, 12:24 PM Ok, you're comparing grapes to grapefruits, the cv's on a motorhome are somewhat different. If I get what you're saying, you have the complete assembly out, and you're trying to remove the outer joint. There is a little clip that retains the cv joint, and if memory serves, you can just tap the cv joint off. use a small maul or something, be careful not to score the shaft or splines. Generally, it's better to replace the entire shaft complete with inners and outers... Tamango 02-05-2006, 12:27 PM Thanks for the reply, how do i tap it off? It's a shaft, so I tap on the inner cv joint? I mean where is my point of impact? Thanks so far :) rhynes 02-05-2006, 12:31 PM Are you trying to replace or repair the outer joint? I used to mount the shaft in a vice, hold the splines of the outer CV firmly and tap the edges of the outer cv joint. It should pop off fairly easily. There's a c-clip that holds the outer cv in place, it doesn't take much pressure to override it. Tamango 02-05-2006, 12:34 PM Replacing the outer joint. I'll give it a try and if anyone cares, i'll post my progress, you know, for motivation :) Thank you rhynes 02-05-2006, 12:42 PM Silly question, how hard was it to get the cv joint out of the hub? Don't know if ford ever chaged that situation. I had an 88 EXP and it was a bitch trying to get the shafts out, think they rusted in place. Finally had to take it to a wrecker and get their torch out. Tamango 02-05-2006, 01:24 PM That's the problem, I didnt' take it out of the hub :). So the cv joint is still attached to the hub, so I took out the steering knuckle with the cv. So I want to take apart the outter cv joint, I torch off the bolt from the hub, and get another outter cv joint. So good luck to me :) rhynes 02-05-2006, 02:42 PM Yep, have fun with that... :) I swear i'll never touch the cv's on another escort unless I have the proper tools. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
