Fill up tank and make a note of the mileage on the odometer. Then drive around as you would normally do. Fill the tank again and note how many miles you put on the car and how much fuel you put into the tank. Divide the number of miles by the number of gallons used. This will tell you how many miles to the gallon you are getting. If the number of miles is really low, then you may have another problem.

Note that trip odometers are notoriously wrong.

yes teh odometers on these cars are usually very wrong. according to my original toyota manual the tank is 13.2 gallons but like i said even if my car stalled into the station i can only fill it to 10

I don't think this is typical. You may have a problem with a kinked vent line or something which prevents you from filling all the way. Can you see gas in the fill tube when you're done? If so, you may have a dent in the tank instead of the blocked vent.

You're probably right, but it is common for hoses to get kinked when you are installling a tank.

well even with the ten gallons it throw the gauge all the way up. the point im trying to make is that the toyota manual may be wrong
