Too much transmission fluid.

I've discovered that there is too much automatic transmission fluid in my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 which has a 318 cubic inch engine. Will I have to drop the pan to drain out the excess fluid or is there a drain tube?:banghead:

Are you checking the fluid in park or neutral? I believe that transmission doesn't pump in park, so it will give a false high reading. If it is overfull, you could remove a trans cooler line from the radiator and start it. only pump out a little at a time, checking often.

Corning is correct in that you have to check a chrylser tranny with it in neutral, because the pump stops working when in park.

:cheers:Thanks corning_d3. Dad taught me years ago to check automatic tranmission fluid in NEUTRAL but I was checking it in the PARK position. I had to add almost a quart to reach a good operating level on the dip stick. Shifting is much better.

Glad to hear it. I can't figure why Chrysler wanted to be different...

Shifting from 2nd to 3rd still hangs up in 2nd at times. Someone told me a way to replace the old fluid without having to drop the pan is to disconnect the transmission fluid at the radiaitor, measuring the amount drained and replacing it with fresh fluid. I would repeat the process after driving it for several days to replace more of the old fluid. Only a trickle flows out when I disconnect the line from the radiator. Should I start the engine so that the transmission will pump the fluid out? Will this damage the transmission?
