I bought a used 2000 xterra se with manual transmission a couple of weeks ago. I had no problmes until yesterday when I tried to shift the car from 4wd back to 2wd.

  After a I came to a complete stop, I shifted the system back to a 2wd, I started to drive the truck again, and then a horrible loud grinding noise emerged from the truck. The noise went on for a good 5 to 10 seconds, I couldnt stop i was in the middle of main road, and then, I heard a very loud BOOM and the truck all the sudden was fine again.

It appeard that 4wd system got stuck going from 4wd to 2wd. Is this normal in the xterra? I drove a 94 pathfinder for many years and that never happened. . I am really worry about engaging the 4wd system again. Should I be worry? Has anyone experieced something similar? Please your input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Of course it's not normal. Sounds like a hub acting up. If it happens again, worry, but for now I'd consider it a fluke.

Hmmm. OffroadX is right, that's definately NOT normal. If I were you, I would do some test runs in front of your house, switching from 4wd to 2wd to verify fluke or problem. Good Luck!

Sounds like a blown hub to me as well. Just out of curiousity, were you on dry pavement when in 4wd? Something makes me wonder since you said you were in the middle of a main road.

Schludwiller, the main road was wet, at the time(melted snow, salt, sand). It was bitter cold all day long, so, maybe that had something to do with it. I will do some test runs this morning before I go to work and hopefully the system will be ok. I hope!!! I let you know how it goes.

Thanks
