i have 94 escort that ran out of gas, now the car wont start. any troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It's possible that garbage at the bottom of the tank was pulled up by the fuel pump and clogged part of the fuel delivery system.

Check if this model has a fuel cutoff switch or breaker - if so, make sure it is reset.
I'd change the fuel filter definitely - probably on the firewall, almost centered.
If no joy, then I'd inspect fuel pump and fuel injectors.

Since there was no gas to lubricate the fuel pump, it may have burned up. Check to see if you have fuel pressure.

I bet it's the fuel cut off switch.
