To buy...or not to buy?

I found a 1995 240sx near where I live for $4900. I could probably get the price down to maybe like $4500 or $4200 or maybe even lower. I've been trying to find a stick-shift 240sx for a long time, and I finally found it. But the problem is...it has 140,000 miles on it. Should I buy it?

140,000 is alotta miles for a 1995 car. How much longer do you think the car would last? I'm planning on getting the SR20DET for it maybe end of this year or early next year. If it has 140,000 miles on the KA____(forgot the rest of it) engine, and I swap the SR20DET into it, would I have to replace anything since the car was used so much?

well the car would be alittle tired, you would need to change the shocks and the drive shaft. thats all i can think off that would give you any real problems. and a KA can last for a long time, around 200 k miles. i doubt that you would drive 60k miles in a year. soooo go get it.

yeah TatII is right, the shocks will be shot. The 240 SX has a wonderful suspension right out of the factory but these old springs and shocks will make it handle way worse than it should. A new nice suspension set up for the 240 would be a good idea to get if you have the extra cash after getting the SR. But yeah the KA24DE (there's the rest of it for ya) can have a lot of miles on it. There's been one in the paper here forever that has like 215k miles on it. Unbelievable  If your planning on getting an SR swap within the next year or so then you should be fine.

What's the body look like on the 240? Is it all dinged up? Scratched? what's the paint look like on it? Still good condition or what?

That is a LOT of miles for a '95. Maybe it was used as a delivery car (you DONT want a car that was used for deliveries). Unless he has a really long commute, or he used it for frequent long distance travelling, then I would be very wary.

If the car is in GREAT condition, and I mean NO interior blemishes, NO mechanical problems, and good paint/no dents - then 4000 would be an acceptable price. Otherwise talk him down, WAY down. My '96 had 90k on it and I bought it for 4500. The interior and exterior were in good condition and it came with most of the options.

A 96 with only 90k miles on it for 4500!!! I can't find a 93 with less than 130k miles on it for cheaper than 3500. There is one 240 near me that is a 93 and it has 134k miles, it's in good condition, he's got a sony head unit and sony speakers, and he's got a kenwoon 600 wat amp powering 2 12 in sony subs. He's asking 3500 obo. I test drove it and all and it drove very nicely even with the amount of miles it had on it and so I made an offer. I offered him 2600 cash for it and he said no. so then I offered 2800 cash. still said no. Then I said, what about 2600 cash and you can take all your audio equipment out and keep it. Once again he said no. so then I did the 2800 cash and he could take the stereo equipment and he still said no. I didn't really want to pay more than 2800 because it had so many miles on it. I'd like the S14 240 but they are all very expensive around here. the cheapest one in the paper right now is a 95 with 120k miles on it and he's asking 5800 firm.

I'm trying to find a stick-shift 95-98 one, but almost all of the 240sx's that I found are automatic. I've found like 4 around where I live, but one of them was sold, 2 of them are really expensive, and this one has a lot of miles on it.

Is a 1997 the same as a 1995, escept for a few changes in the body? If thats all that's different, a 1997 240sx service manual would work with working on a 1995, right?

there are a few s13 style 240sx's around here. 1 i wanna look at is a black, mint condition 5spd 240sx with only 75k on it, and many options for $4900 obo. do u guys think i should try it, or just get an older 1 that weighs less and throw in the SR20DET engine in it.

WOOHOO!! found another 5spd 1995 240sx!!! woohoo!!!!!
Here is what the seller e-mailed to me...

It is a 95 and I have owned it since new (it was my first and only so far, new car) so I didn't beat on it. The car is emerald blue (that green that changes to purple) and a greyish green cloth on the inside. It has what was called then a convenience package ... which basically means it's not an SE but has a ton of options. AC/dual airbags/ABS/CD with premium sound system... which I found out after I got my other car that it has better and more speakers. 89,000 miles 5 speed and if it matters to you or not it already has a factory limited slip rear. When it was time to replace the shocks we used Tokico and added Eibach springs that brought it down about 1 & 1/2 inches and I put after market wheels on it. They are RHO Blades in 17 inch with black ice finish and Yokohama Paradas. I still have the factory wheels with good all seasons on them. Lots of tread on both.

The seller's asking $7,000 for it. But I'm trying to bargain and bring it down to like the low $5,000's or something like that.

Should I buy it?

oh yea, and does anyone know by any chance the average price of a decent paint job? It doesn't have to be some super fancy metallic super triple coated flourescent glow in the dark gloss coated super paint job or anything..just a normal paint job. Or how hard would it be to paint it myself?

That sounds like a pretty good deal right there. I doubt that you will be able to talk him down 2k but if you do then you are basically stealing that car. Sounds like it's nice and would be a good car. Plus it's already got the limited slip so that's good :D

The price can vary a lot depending on color, quality, and how far you decide to go with it. You could always get a Maaco (not sure if you have it near you or not) paint job for about $350 but the paintjobs have to be the shittiest ones I've ever seen. they don't give a garauntee on their paintjobs or anything. If you took it to a reputable shop then it would start to get expensive. I'll use my friend as an example. He recently took his 95 honda civic to a good shop here in town and he wanted to get his car painted black. He said it didn't have to be a really nice, top of the line black but he just wanted it to look nice. Then you have to decide how many layers of paint you want them to put on and if you want any amount of clear coat over the paint. The guys at the shop said their "basic" paint job was 3 layers of paint and 1 layer of clear coat. His total cost for the whole paint job was about $2,100. If you have a lot of knowledge on painting a car yourself and think you can do a good job then you would save a lot of money by doing it yourself. It will take a long time though because your going to have to prep the car by grinding it down/taping the parts you don't want painted/any removing dents if needed/etc..... Then you are going to need access to all of the tools, like an air compressor. IMO I think I would rather pay to have it done because it just sounds like to much work to be done yourself.

Hehe, you wouldn't want to die or something before you got your car.

It's probably to late now but get your ass over there and start a bidding war. If you want it that bad then you should be willing to pay for it. just offer higher than the other guy. Since the guy probably already bought it now, go to his house and offer to pay him the price that he paid plus $200 or whatever it's worth to you.

hmmmm...This question is for any car, not just the 240sx...Is there anyway to adjust how far back or how high the pedals are in a car? Cause I was driving my car today (1995 Chrysler Concorde), and noticed that it was really uncomfortable where the pedals were. Not sure why I just noticed it today though.

I found my car on www.cars.com Also try autotrader and ebay motors. You should have no trouble finding a decent 240sx within 100 miles.

A 96 with only 90k miles on it for 4500!?!

The actual mileage was 96k (heh 96k on a 96) but that is a LOT of miles for a 96. Thats like (counts fingers...toes) 44 miles EVERY DAY.

BTW Adjustable pedals is an option found on luxury cars

Toxic

awwwww, damn luxury cars. So there's no way to adjust the pedals on a 240sx? Even if I go into the pedal assembly thing and do some tinkering?
