Why I'm As Strong As A Horse

Im Bored and got to thinking today in weight lifting... I calulatedi ny mhead that i am stronger than a horse. (im a nerd i know  )

We all know that 1hp = 746w and that 1w= 1 joule/sec and 1 joule = 1N*1M

Let's use a clean and jerk for an example.

I can clean and jerk 80kg for one rep, that is nearing my maximum for clean AND jerk.

F=M*A

There for 80kg exerts 800N of force at rest on earth (aprox) We will omit that fact that i am accelerating it upward and then using momentem to carry the lift through, since over all i will exert 800N of average force.

800N*2m = 1600j

1600j / 2sec = 800w which is close to 746. Therefor i can exert over 1hp for a short period of time :iceslolan

176.something

i never maxed out cleaning... i did 230 one time tho, that was enough to beat everyone else so i quit :grinyes:

I don't remeber my clean from high school, it was up there though. I still remeber my best lift was my dead lift, it was over 700 pounds, I think like 750, 760ish.

Dreamspawn

How much did you weight when you did that dead lift? I weighed 135 and i could dead lift around 650. But i could only bench 130lbs lol.

CBFryman

^lol

i weigh 140 out of shape and 130-135 in XC season. Remember that is the clean and jerk, which is over the head, so i am pretty proud of that though people have beat me.

Never maxed in dead lift but i could leg press nearly 500lbs when the leg press machine worked and that was freshman year. Sophmore soccer i squated 3 something, i dont remember. My best bench max is 175 which is 40lbs over my weight so that is well above average (at my school anyway).

We had a kid in my weightlifting class last semester that was just a bit bigger than me (maybe weighed 150) and would throw 225 on the bar for warm up for max testing. he maxed near 300. That is pretty damn good.

On the down side, im not as strong as a horse running. My best 3k is around 20min, which is 1200sec....if im battleing even 100N of friction that is 600,000 Joules (or around 1500 food calories) and my average power output is a mere 250w... or 0.3.2hp.

However I used to could run the 400 in 1min 10sec, if i fight 150N of average force i exert an average 800w.

Oh and thinking about that top gear episode....they said that in 1 lap a grey hound exerts enough energy to boil a glass of water, to go from 20 to 100 it takes 250ml of pure water 83600j. plus a whole lot more to change it into a vapor...hmmm...say 100000j flat and its a 1mi track? that only 62N of drag...fucking streamlined...lol.

CBFryman, give yourself more credit man ... I would never call you a clean jerk :(

Anyway, I am sure I am stronger than at least 1/2 of a horse based on this:

Heh, I never did dead lift on account of a back injury I recieved playing raquetball, (yes I know it's not supposed to be brutal) but my max bench in highschool was 240 pounds when I only wieghed 145 pounds. My workout buddies used to call me Mr. Bench

I was 240 when I did that lift (and we had to do it five times in a row like a set). I coulda gone more, but the coach would only let us go three times. However, when I was 240, my max bench was 375 five times. Max squat was well into the 500s, and my best clean/jerk was three somthing. My 40 on the other hand was nothing to brag about, but I put the whupin on the kid who started at SMU his freshman year at QB, and that guy that was a first round draft to the Stealers I think (could be another team, I heard Stealers).

Did you all ever do harnesses *where you put the harness and and sombody grabs the other end and they try to keep you from running?? I laughed so hard one day at football practice. Cause my couch saw taht i could use my legs niceley so he put a linebacker on the ned of my harness and i guess he wasn't expecting much from a 6'0 135lb guy and when he said go i actully pulled him to the ground and drug him. IT was hiarous. I also gave a pggy back ride to our 400lb lineman one day. According to everybody at practice you couldn't see me at all from the back.

lol^^ gotta love carrying fat guys.

i never actually played football, the coaches were always trying to recruit me every year, and i almost did my senior year. but yeah they needed a running back, and me being pretty fast and 6' 190lbs i was a pretty decent size for it.

reason is cause i played on one of the best soccer teams in ohio... not on a college team right now tho cause i fucked my chances when i was kinda ineligible during our best year. i got screwed by a teacher, sued the school, teacher lied under oath. bunch a bullshit.

Rice(er), not ex, im in training for next season, hoping to break into the 18's by the end of the school year and over the summer when im not working ill be running...i want to be into the 16's or atleast the 17's by regionals so hopefully if my team doesnt make it to state i will on a personal score, Im looking for just a little scolarship at UCF, even if its just books, im gonna be running on the team anyway, may as well bust my ass to get something for it now. Making it to state and improving your personal best by 3min in one off season = good potential in the eyes of a coach :)

That's why tools were invented, to do the heavy work for us. You can lift and run your ass off. I'll use machines like cars and fork lifts to do my work, at the end of the day we'll see who's back doesn't hurt. :icon16:

I played running back/tail back the coach always called me slinky cause i was so skinny and tall and my big thing was i could switch directions quickly Still think i should goto college to play football LOL is there age limit for playing in college?

lol...i was 165 b4 freshman yr...i started at running back and then switched to d line. never came off the field. end of that season was 195. last yr i was 180 and end of season 185 this yr i started at 175 and ended at 195, but being slimmer than i was so i guess im gettin more muscle. im plannin on being over 200 with a 6-pac by augest, and that means more work for me and selling workout tapes with sugar pills to redneck when his cheating cherrios life trick doesnt work anymore...lol

i cant really recall what i run the 400m in, i think it was like 59 sec something....

I didn't want to make a life outa football. I had been playing since I was knee high to a duck, and it was really starting to wear on me. I mean, I played my freshman year here at college, and started the entire season. I just didn't wanna do it anymore, it stopped being fun and became a job that I wasn't getting paid for. Im not nearly as strong as I used to be becuase I've kinda slacked off, but I'm starting to get back into lifting.

And speaking of harnesses, our coach harnessed me and the other gaurd of us to a Ford Explorer, put it in nuetral, and we had to pull it across a parking lot. That was fun. And I remeber the bands, I hated those becuase I was one of the fastest oline men we had, and when ever I took off, the other guy couldn't keep up, and I was always freaking that the band would snap...

My best time was off season

duing XC season a 400 is the last thing on your mind, that was freshman track and beleive it or not i actually got a lil out of shape playing soccer. Then my grades dropped so i was never able to see what my best was. During speed workouts in XC i would have to do 400 repeats and make them under 1:25 8 times with 1:30 rest so i am pretty confidenct i can beat 1:10...

still 2:15 is good for the 800, at least at the high school level...colledge 2:00 flat is the norm and i dunno for olympics. I know that some of the fastest colledge runnser can do a 400 in 44-45sec consistantly and to be on the B-Class training team for hte olympics you have to do a 43 to even been considered...which is freaking insane because a 45sec 400 has an average speed of 20mph. which is crazy because your 400 is sapposed to be a sprint stride sprint stride sprint

Sprint Turn 1, stride the 100 straight meters...ie carry momentem from the corner through the straight, sprint turn 2. stride, once agian carry momentem, about 50m of the straight and then give it 100%. though 400 at the colledge level may just be steady acceleration but i imagine that would build some lactic acid pretty quick.

go through all 5 in the truck simply because it saves gas, now when i was driving my moms truck and not paying for gas i went 1, 2 5....lol

-The Stig-
01-31-2006, 07:36 PM
it saves gas in Z28 by skipping gears, gotta keep the RPM's low... or else it drinks fuel like an Irish bastard on St. Pattys day.

TheStang00

how would going thru all 5 save gas?

keeps the rpms low as possible, you can shift at lower speeds by using all gears thus keeping the rpms lower. i used to go 1st 3rd 5th too when i first got my car but then i started being a little more gas conservative.

GForce957
01-31-2006, 10:14 PM
well what i mean is, wouldnt 1,3,5 keep rpms lower then 1,2,3,4,5

TheStang00
01-31-2006, 10:57 PM
well what i mean is, wouldnt 1,3,5 keep rpms lower then 1,2,3,4,5

no, because you can shift sooner when you go every gear, you dont have to run one gear up as high to go to the next.

Chiquae07
02-01-2006, 12:05 AM
my times aren't good for me anyway, others that i run with run 50 flat 400m, and i guess our 1 miler can run crazy as hell. i dont do the 400 or 800, i do shotput and disc(disc my specialty). otherwise i run to keep in shape and be faster for football, otherwise there is no reason for it for me.

and for that ^^

ok senario 1,3,5

1st -3500rpms
shift
3rd - 3000rpms
shift
5th - 1000rpms

now the 1,2,3,4,5

1st - 2000rpms
shift
2nd 2000rpms
shift
3rd - 2000rpms
shift
4th - usually hits 45 mph at 1500rpms
shift only if long straight/or not much traffic
5th - 1000rpms
and stay there at 50mph

keeping the rmps down is the key. if u can stay under 2000rpms for a full tank, you will at least double you're mpg rating(maybe not that high, but in rednecks case he might get like 20mpg city instead of 13)

edit : fixed the rpms

i noticed a 2mpg drop from shifting at 2500 compared to 3000 untill i reach 50-55...if i shift much below 2500 the engine bogs and i have to give it MORE throttle to compensate.

well yeah there is a line there where you dont want to shift below. but it you shift from 1st at 3000 to third, then your engine is gonna bog and the same thing happens. at the same time if you run it up the the proper speed to shift into third then your gonna be turning a lot of rpms, thus using more gas. thats why using every gear saves gas. in rednecks case, his car has so much lowend tq that it really doesnt matter that much how he does it. but id imagine with the way he does it, that it accelerates a lil faster.

Chiquae07
02-09-2006, 12:34 AM

GForce957
02-09-2006, 12:17 PM
haha i get more than that sometimes, but i was just wondering, since i can keep the rpms under 2 and go 1,3,5.

that doesnt happen in every situation tho, and its a pain in the ass going that slow
