I bought a 97 Ford Escort with a thrown rod. I have done couple of engine swaps on import cars.Question is can I swap the engine on this vehicle with an engine hoist?

or do i have to drop down the engine/tranny craddle from a lift?

An engine hoist is the preferred way of doing it. Both the engine and transmission come out from the top as a unit.
