i've been wondering this for a long time and i know this is a stupid question, but what the hell does a blow off valve do?

This is a pretty generic explanation, but hopefully you'll get the picture.

When the engine uses the turbo's pressure, everything is ok. When you are shifting gears, for example, there is a back up because the engine is not using as much air. The air that the turbo is trying to feed to the engine can go back and cause a backspin in the turbo which eventually will wear it out. A blow off valve lets off that unused pressure. It also helps the engine by relieving that pressure.

If you are confused on how the turbo itself works, go to www.howstuffworks.com and read up on it. They might even explain BOV's better than I can.
