steering column loose!

1988 escort steering column is loose. the steering has a tilt wheel. it moves back and forth about 1 inch. how do i tighten up the steering wheel where it attaches to the steering column. thanks edsel...

ok any idea where i can get a diagram as to how the steering column goes together? i have a chilton manual but it appears that the only thing holding the steering together is the signal switch. i would like to find out how many screws hold it all together. need to see if one has come out causing the looseness. again thanks, edsel...

You can try the dealer part's counter. Go in when they are not too busy, the guyt behind the counter may make a copy of the page you need out of the factory service manual for the price of an oil filter and an air filter.
