I have an autotap scan tool and it has worked well with 98,99 toyota camrys, but when I went to hook it up to my 98 avalon, the diagnostic jack in the car does not match the hookup for the scan tool. Is there an adapter available or is there another jack somewhere else in the car. I have the same problem with my 99 avalon?

The hook up connector is the same for all OBDII Toyotas. The Camry's is usually under the steering wheel dash. The Avalons are usually behind the small pull out by your left knee drivers side where the fuses are.

Avalon is position 2 area C use this site for help.

Did you ever get this worked out? I am looking to purchase a scanner and was wondering how this one worked on Avalons. (mine is a '98).

Let me know.

I just got a 1999 and a 2000 Avalon. Can they be programmed to use the same remote? Also, the doors lock on the 2000 when you engage transmission but not on the 1999.

mooseketer (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/member.php?u=229817) any obdII scanner will work with your 98. The connection for OBDII is a standardized plug. You can get a basic from Northern tool for about $50 or more advanced features for over $1000. Autoxray makes an excellent tool also...try autoxray.com.

tpraiser, no they can't unless you buy an aftermarket unit that's customized (with same codes)to work in both cars.

The door locking/unlocking sequence has 4 programmable variables. I believe they were posted in the FAQs section here but I'm not certain. I think I posted them here once . You might ask the moderator Brian if he knows them.

I too have a scanner that will not work with my 2001 Avalon, despite it working just fine with my '97 Land Cruiser, and '02 MR2 Sypder. I have power to the OBDII port and everything else seems to be working fine, just can't get the Avalon to be recognized. I have a Harrison R&D scanner which works on a laptop or Palm--neither of which will work with the Avalon :banghead:

Is there anything "special" about the OBDII on the Avalon?

They're all the same. Perhaps your software needs updating.
