Last week, we developed a noise in our 1999 suburbran. It is very loud, and very annoying. The best way to explain it is that it sounds like when you were a kid and but a playing card in the spokes of your bike to make noise. I thought it was a stripped speedo gear or speedo-cable, but no speedo cables on this car. It does not make the noise all the time, but always under a load. When I give it gas, it starts but not if in neutral. It sounds really loud inside the vehicle, but you can not hear it when I roll down the window. Any ideas? The truck has 96K on it so it is out of warranty. Was hoping I could fix without having to take to a dealer!

What comes to my mind is a cracked flywheel.I think that you can take the lower flywheel cover off and look to see if the are any cracks or missing bolts. Also maybe check the motor mounts and tranny mount.I hope this will help.

munder0000, I would look under the vehicle in the vicinity of the drive shaft linkage to the engine. Maybe a loose or broken yoke pin??

I had a simliar problem with my '99 last summer. Kind of sounds like a small engine plane inside your vechile? It was the U-joint on my truck.
