Rally Sport
02-07-2006, 05:49 PM
Right now i'd say John, but Curtis would have it when it's running right, but im still not sure, we'd have to have a contest of drag runs.

Rally Sport
02-07-2006, 05:52 PM
Also the car would be a 4th gen Firebird. If either John or Curtis is.. it wouldnt change.

So....3rd gens may be winning this poll...

John...maybe we should start up a poll on who is fastest? :D
I couldn't agree more :grinyes:.

Also on that note I am unsure who is aware and who is unaware but I am in the processing of adding a little boost to my ride via a 6 PSI powerdyne. That should put me in the 700 horse neighborhood not sure exactly how much your making Mr.Luos but I am sure to give you a run.

There arent nearly enough 2nd gens on this forum...I should have my uncle Jeff sign up. He has been prepping his special edition 1974 Z28 for a couple months now...shure is taken his sweet time get'n er ready for a new paint job :evillol:
It was one of his two "Highschool Hotrods" :smokin: He did all the mods to it while in high school(graduated in '79) and was able to squeeze 550 HP out of it :bananadie...which I think is very impressive for that time.

FormulaLT1
02-07-2006, 07:24 PM
550 is impressive for anytime.

malletslinger
02-07-2006, 07:36 PM
I do agree, but nowadays there are cars with 600...700...1000...and higher HP...but for the most part, they usually require the assistance of computers and not to mention all the advances in engineering... All I am saying is that these days, much more is possible...but ofcourse you know that...approaching 700HP!!!
So of course it impressive, but at the time he did all the mods, I really dont think it would have been possible to get much more out of an engine then MABE 580

FormulaLT1

Thats actually not the case. They were possibly of creating tons more power back then its just now adays with the added control of computer aided stuff like injector pulsing and MAF/density sensors. You can make that power much more efficeintly. While the L88 or ZL1's may have made some serious power in the 500+ area stock back in the 60's. a newer V8 like a LS6 would be able to make that type of gross power while being like 300 - 400% more fuel efficient.

FormulaLT1

Not to mention drive quality.

The economy sucking killed the Camaro. You want something to blame. Blame terrorism.

Genopsyde

I find it very hard to believe that a stock engine put out 500+ back in the 60's...what car was it in? What size was it? The L88 was the corvette engine right? I didnt even think that made it past the 400s
I know emissions systems greatly chocked the gas guz. muscle cars of the 70s (71 Buick Riv. with a 455 had 330HP stock whereas the 72 had like 20HP less just because of changes in the emissions systems) but I dont see how a stock engine could have put out 500+ HP in that era...even in the 60's (before the emissions systems) with the restrictions of leaded gasoline(such as brass valve components) and cast iron. Did they even have 4-barrel carbs back then? (I'l have to look into that)
I can tell you know your stuff, but I would have to disagree with you without doing more research on this subject:sorry:

GM purposely under rated certain engines and yes its crank/flywheel horsepower. No horsepower rating done by manufactor is done at the rear wheels. So you can't even use that figure for new cars cause they measure horsepower at the flywheel not rear wheels.

Also to help you in your research here's this article from corvette fever. http://corvettefever.com/techarticles/corp_0509_bigblock/index1.html

John how do you figure that the Fbody died because of terrorism? I thought it died because of the import scene that began hitting back then.. with the start of F&F and everything.

FormulaLT1
02-07-2006, 10:30 PM
The Camaro died because lack of sales. Can't buy a new car if you have no income and 9/11 happen in 2001 and then GM decided after the sales of the 2002 Camaro they would be discontinuing it. See a coincidence there cause I do. All automakers had declined sales in 2002 and 2003 not just GM. So you can't blame the fast and furious even though that movie definitely gave some of the import guys mighty mouse balls.

I had almost forgotten why my uncle dropped a vette engine in his '74 Z28. Im so used to seeing our Corvette parked that sometimes I forget why we call it "the rocket" :evillol:

If I remember correctly, GM experience a decline in Camaro sales prior to 9/11.
I dont remember where I read it, but I distinctly remember reading somewhere that the Camaro had earned the reputation of worst car in _________(America, the US, or the world, cant remember) sometime during the reign of the fourth gen.
Does anyone else remember that?

Rally Sport
02-07-2006, 10:46 PM
I wasnt blaming it purely on the movie, it was part of it, if you ask alot of import dudes they'll surely say F&F got em into cars/imports and thats when the import scene started to get big was back in 01..

:wtf: The fourth Gen Camaro has a rep of being the worst car in the world?. Have you been smoking some of Rally's stash. The camaro is considered to be even among the import guys a quick car for the most part. If any of the gens take the most stuff for being junk its the third gens (I completely disagree with it) but most of time you see the other makes/models putting down third gens not 4th gen.

Rally Sport
02-07-2006, 11:04 PM
Not cool, John. I dont share my stash. :lol2: Anyway, I dont hate 4th gens.. they are the quickest but I just dont really like the styling except that of a firebird.

The 4th gen LT1 camaro only had 2 main problems.... 1 opti and 2 waterpump.... both usually lasting 100k nevertheless.... other than that they were and are powerhouses of the day... for how much power they create compared to mustang etc they still have less problems than your daily driver... I think you need to start reading creditable sources and not mustang bumperstickers...

 Yeah Camaros sure were powerful when they came out with the LT1.. finally the Mustang can say that its as fast(er) than your Lt1 v8.. only took them forever.

Secondly, I wasnt saying I hate 4th gens...Im not stupid, I know how powerful and fast they are! And I dont recall saying that the rep was solely the result of the 4th gens... BTW I see the bumpers of Mustangs as a target to aim for....lol :chair: :lol2:

it is actuly a good thing that they stoped makin it in a way, be for you beat the shit out of me let me explain, then stop makin it lets every one know how bad they were and how much they miss them, and every one talking about the new camaro will remind every one about the camaro again, so there sales for the new camaro for the first few years will be bad ass!!

GM management lost track of the joy of building fast cars flat out. They ditched the inhouse performance aspect and comissioned SLP and just focused on how much to charge for it, which was just too damn much.

Now that GM realized they were monkey fucking themselves while Ford and Chrysler were getting all the lost souls without a product, they switched all the mgmt. around and look at what is happening.

And even now, Ford apparently didn't learn from GM's mistakes since they shut down the SVT program and let companies like Roush do it for them. :screwy:

I closed the poll cause someone voted in it. There is nothing wrong with voting but just like bringing back a old thread with a post. Its annoying if you have nothing on that specific subject to update about.
