Hey guys, shortly I'm planning on buying either a Spec V or a SRT-4. I'm leaning more toward the Spec V but I was curious if the owners of the car here could support or go against my decision and give me fair warning.

Thanks.

Well, first of all, the SRT-4 is MUCH faster. If you're just looking for power, get the SRT.

However, the 03+ Specs are much more reliable than the SRT and handles slightly better. The SRT is known to blow head gaskets like no other.

What are you looking for in a car? The SRT isn't too much more expensive than a Spec but you would save at least a few thousand to modify the Spec.

I would get an 03 Spec just for the looks and because I'm afraid of the reliability of the SRT. Also a Turbo'd or VQ swapped Spec would take down an SRT anyday. Plus, I'm just a Nissan fanboy!

I love Nissan as well and I lean to the Spec V for the reliability and the fact that if it comes down to performance, by spending the same difference for the SRT-4 I could purchase a turbo kit that has great reviews and works fine with the stock engine and tranny without any problems and @ 8psi takes the Spec V to 285HP or so.

I'm buying new also so the 03 isn't what I'd be getting. 05 or more likely 06.

ive driven both the srt-4 and the spec v..... the srt4 feels pretty fawking fast..... but the interior feel isnt exactly comfortable..... none of the controls are in a familiar spot and it just feels weird..... you could pick up an 05-06 spec v.... (they arent out in 06 yet)......swap the 03 front end and youd have a better looking, better handling car than the srt-4..... plus it would be comfortable to drive everyday....... if youre looking for power there is a turn key vq35 6 cylinder swap..... it will beat both the turbo spec and the srt-4 and it costs 4500 to have it completely setup the way you want it...... dave will argue with me but i will be linking a video of a vq35 spec beating a turbo spec in a drag......

btw the 06 IS out and I have driven it... the Winchester (near where I live) dealership has 2 of them, just both are the audio package... I want the brake package one but I guess I could live without ABS.

dont know where you get your information, but i request that you check it once again. srts are VERY reliable, and do NOT have head gasket issues. the first gen neons did, but the srts are known to run more than 450hp on stock internals all day long. fast enough to get you in the low 11's at the track. also, with a few bolt on suspension parts, its capable of pulling more than 1.0 on the skidpad. look into the SCC SRT4 lightweight article. please, dont bench race, an srt and can be in the 12's for less than $1000 reliably

that's the actual one I test drove... it's nice... maybe you're thinking 2007 models?

A Spec is capable of pulling over 1.0g on the skidpad too and will beat an SRT in the slalom. I've heard many a story of stock SRTs blowing head gaskets after 20k miles. Yes, I've also seen a lot of 400hp SRTs, but I'm sure this guy isn't looking for a tire eating monster since he's considering cars in the $20k price range.

Honestly I've looked at used Evos as well, but my dream cars are Evo VIIs and R34 Skylines (neither of which are in America) so I wanna hold off on the Evo till I accomplish something major (ie. graduating college and landing a big job).

I'm a big Nissan fan, power isn't everything in a race. I've learned that so many times. In 3 years I've owned and sold 8 cars and honestly the best ones were the less powerful ones. Yeah it's fun to know your stock car can beat anything you come across, but I prefer knowing that my >200 HP stock car that I've personnally tuned can do it too. Not just in straights but through turns and any other condition you can think of.

The reputation of the manufacturer is another big thing for me. Nissan has quite a history to them and I respect that. That alone demands respect. The fact that the car is tuneable is another big plus to it. I've owned a Neon, it was ok. Though I have always had a thing for Nissans, I've never owned one. I've almost completely ruled out any other car for my next one.

The 20k price range is by choice. I don't want a huge car payment every month, but I want something sporty and fun. For awhile now I've had my Escort and she's been good to me. I've done some minor tuning and she's quicker than she once was, but I've completely master it... so I'm bored with it and want to move on. I can't complain, the car was 5k when I bought it and it's done its job nicely. Gas mileage is another reason I look to the Sentra, with prices they are now 93 octane will kill me.

uh oh srt fan boi.......its ok tex.... we all know that the srt-4 is the fastest car evar built and when it races at teh dragstrip it goes so fast it tears the space/time continuem......thus moving forward in time so that it pwns all.....the srt-4 with the competition group (which is rare) is almost 24k in price.... for that you could swap the v6 into the spec..... turbo charge it....... and have money left for suspension parts to hit that 1.0 on the skid pad and all you would get is a stock srt....... spec wins for the money

Yeah, to be fair, the 4.0 swap wasn't even his idea. He just wanted input because he doesn't know much about cars.
