I found so much help with a rear seal replacement on my 2000 xterra (two wheel drive) I thought maybe I could get some help with this.
My brake pedal seems to go further to the floor than normal and sometimes the ABS light will come on. The vehicle still stops but something doesn't feel right. Could it be the master cylinder? This problem started before I replaced the rear seal. I found the seal leak when I pulled the wheels to investagate the brake problem. I also cleaned the ABS sensors on the front & rear as well as replace the rear shoes when I did the seal. Any ideas?

Did you refill the reservior and bleed it real good? When you had a bad seal it may have let air into the line. I would thoroughly bleed it again. Also, when you replaced the rear shoes did you adjust the adjuster thingy that spreads the pads in the drum? When I did my rear shoes, I forgot to adjust it and the pedal went to the floor.

Thanks for the advice! I did have to take the wheel cylinder off to replace the wheel seal & bleed that wheel. I also did adjust the shoes. I'm wondering if there is a special proceedure to bleeding the system due to the ABS pump/module beside the master cylinder

Only if you got air in at the master cylinder. Otherwise, it's a standard bleed. LR, RR, LF, RF is the order.

I'm 95% sure you are supposed to disconnect the battery before bleeding the brakes to avoid getting air in the ABS module. You can bleed the ABS in the truck, but it's a PITA. A bench bleed would be better.

hi im a newbie, my abs light, on my 00 xterra, has been on for a while but my brakes seem fine. I think i might just need to clean the abs sensor but I dont know where its located, or how to get to it.:screwy:

Clean the sensor surface and the ABS rotor. It looks like a gear with flat teeth. There could be mud packed inbetween the teeth on the rotor. There will be a black rubber like line to each wheel. Not the brake line to the calipers or drum. There's either a phillips screw or 10mm nut that holds a metal fastener in place and you lift that out and there's your sensor.

do i need to take the wheels off to get to that or can i get to it from the backside?

You can get to the sensors from the back side, but the ABS rotor will be easier to get to with the wheels off. I'm sure either a sensor is bad or the surface needs cleaned off. I'd clean them all. Most likely it is not an ABS rotor. Also check the wiring up to the sensor. Maybe you snagged it on something. Who knows. You could buy a OBDII code reader with ABS diagnostics to identify which of the 4 are bad.
