92 Cavalier feels like a standard after 60km/h(ish)

its actually my girlfriends car. When she drives it in the city, it feels perfectly fine, its when she takes it on the highway going speeds upwards of 60km/h+

The car doesnt "cruise". When you lift your foot off of the gas, it feels like the clutch has been left in on a standard car. The car doesnt continue to roll nicely....feels like something is holding it back...

for some reason I remember someone telling me that its the torque convertor solenoid?

Any ideas? I coulda sworn someone had shown me a writeup on how to replace one too :(

Do a search, for christ's sake the link to the writeup is still on the front page.

sounds like the lockup for the torque converter is staying on, you could simply unplug it, i did this on a car and drove it for years afterwards, there's a wire harness on the side of the transmission, you could just unhook this and try it

1 - That'd kill your lockup, which is basically your fourth gear ratio. Kiss mileage goodbye.

2 - Its not on the side of your tranny, its on top.

1. No fourth gear on a 3-speed!

2. On the front drivers side of the tranny, on a 92 2.2.

actually, forget what i said earlier,it should feel like a standard when it's coasting at highway speeds because the lockup is on, if it starts to shift violently or bangs and clunks you could try unhooking it, won't affect mileage as much as one thinks because you use the most gas accelerating or going uphill when the lockup isn't usually on anyway. may not be a problem at all just the nature of the beast

Final gear ratio is a 1:1 thanks to the torque converter locking up. Technically not a gear, but basically is.

There's a passenger's side to the tranny?

i think he meant driver side. its under the pan that you can see thru the wheel well and its TECHNICALLY on top but you still have to get it from the side :P as far as i know a lockup only drops rpm from 200-300 rpm and nets about 3-4mpg.
