Received P0500 error code (vehicle speed sendor problem) for a '99 Camry. Already replaced vehicle speed sensor. Problem still exists.
- odometer goes out
- speedo doesn't work
- trans not shifting properly
Any suggestions, recommendations?

thanks

P0500 indicates a fault in the VSS CIRCUIT, not just the VSS itself.. Did you inspect the wires/harness connected to the VSS for chaffing?

thanks, will check the harness.. The odd part is that after codes reset and car sits, will start up again, run for approx. 10-15 minutes and then odometer shuts off, trans won't shift.

4 or 6 cyl? Any other gauge lights inop? Do shift indicator lights work? Any electrical or other mods to the car?

4 cyl..... All other electrical components work fine.. Only the odometer goes off/out. All other lights fine.

same problem in my car....the code says VSS sensor malfunction....

what could it be? i pulled out the speed sensor that mounts in the tranny, and the gear seems okay...what else can it be?

Download your factory manual from the "Factory Service Manual" thread at the top of the forum. It should tell you how to test the VSS circuit. If wiring looks good check the connection on the ECM. Could be corroded or loose or the input contact from the VSS could be pushed or spread.

that manual doesn't work. It wont load up correctly.

also, how do i fix this problem?? there seems to be alots of oil alll aorund the VSS sensor itself and all over the wires. Could the O-ring on the speed sensor be bad and allowing tranny fluid to spew up???

Do i have to replace the sensor itself?? thnks.

Do you mean the download stops? If so, go here...
http://www.getright.com ...download the trial version. Works well for me.
FWIW
YMMV
