99 GT post Vortech, cold start problems

Hi everyone!

For the last couple of years I've had a problem starting my GT in the cold (anything like below freezing). I've sent the ECM back to vortech, and no one knows what's going on. I've replaced the IAC, IAT, (fuel filter and pump were new with the kit) and have gone through all vacuum lines and connections. Here's the deal... the car runs fine when hot. After letting it sit all night,... it will start for (as in the case this morning = 2 minutes) for a little while, and then it stalls out. Then I battle with it for up to 15 minutes trying to get it to start again. Holding the gas down only helps when it catches,... but it'll still stall out no matter how far I have the gas pressed. Air/fuel shows it goes lean... but I don't know how reliable it is since the car is still cold. Any ideas on how I can diag this? I'm out in Binghamton NY, so there aren't many guys I trust out here who know anything about superchargers. My next guess is the Coolant temp sensor... but I'm running out of ideas.

Please help...

Thanks ahead of time.

Hi again,

Replaced the ECT... still nothing.

Codes before I replaced it : P1504, P0412.

Now I have P0707, P0443, P0451, P0172, P0174.

Car still runs well off the bat. (it's 17 degrees today)... but it seems to stall out once the temp gets a little warm. Then I struggle with starting it for about 15 minutes... and finally it starts as if nothing happened. When I'm struggling... the car does a lot of clicking if left in the 'on' position. While I was trying to take codes... it kept clicking,... sounded like it was coming from both the kick panel, and the trunk.

Any ideas... PLEASE HELP!!!

I want my trouble free mustang back. :-(

ALSO... i forgot to mention that my mpg has been really bad since the install. like 150miles per tank!!... is this 'life with a vortech'? or is it related to a possible fuel sys problem?

Here's the latest.

I'm not sure if my problem is similar to : http://forums.svttexas.com/showthread.php?t=7489... but :

The car starts. After it stalls out... something (ccrm?, fuel pump relay?, I dunno) clicks... the odometer goes to '--------'. It clicks for a while. If I leave it in the ON position, and let it click away... it tends to settle down after a minute or two. (The engine fan goes on eventually too). THEN if I turn it off... and try to crank the car... it starts after a couple of times... no problem.

Could the CCRM be screwed up? Or could my chip be screwed up as in the thread I posted above?

Thanks again for any help.

have no clue, but im going to suggest taking it to a good tuning place. i blew a motor in combination with the awesome chip vortech sent with their kit. id get a custom tune done somewhere they will probably be able to fix your problem, sounds to me like a tuning issue but i am not a expert. try a good mustang tuning shop...i know of 4 down my way but youd have to post on www.stangnet.com www.corral.net or www.modulardepot.com they will have better advice for you.

So I got the car dyno tuned.... it did help a lot. The vortech chip was making my car run REALLY rich. So I'm back to having the mileage I should have... BUT, I still have the cold start problem. It seems a little worse now, for I can be driving going 50 and the car will pretty much shut off. (dashes on the odometer and all).

Diablo has told me to try another chip... but this'll be the third. I'm starting to wonder if my 'expansion slot' on my ecm is bad. Any ideas?

Thanks!

So... with my luck vortech sent me TWO screwed up chips. The amazing guys at

New England Dyno in Massachusett (John and Mike) nedyno.com

sent me out a new chip for free (overnight!!! to replace the chip vortech sent me). It did the trick. I finally have my baby back... it's been working perfect for over two weeks now. I recommend them to anyone who needs their car tuned by honest guys in the North East.

For everyone's info,.. I spoke to Diablo about it, and they said the cable for the flip chip can sometimes damage the chip. But they didn't really know why both chips sent to me by Vortech had the issue. Oh well... all is good now. Thanks for your help... it kept me from selling my baby! :-) and forced me to spend money on the tune... thus saving me from spending money on more unnecessary parts.
