97 GJC 2wd 4.0 auto 120k miles Daughter's car I haven't driven very often.

Just been happening past month. Predominately slips with cold engine. Only slips in first and reverse. May slip when car is on an incline. Have not noticed any slippage after 10 miles of driving. Tranny flushed within last 12k miles. Fluid at proper level. Have heard that older jeeps are prone to slippage when weather gets cold and seals get harder and the slippage goes away after seals warm up. Any harm in driving with this problem?

Any thoughts?? Am I looking at a new tranny??

Thats probley the reason, but if it keeps on slipping while driving then its a sensor. Under the tranny, in about the middel there is a sensor that sticks out and if that comes undone, then it will slip and rev high, it happend on my '96. Plugged it back in and it worked fine.

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 96 Limited 4x4, 130,000 miles, 5.2 liter automatic. Recently I just got this jeep from a private owner, it drives great. Lately though, early in the mornings, it has also been slipping like yours. The problem stops after a while but it does the same thing if I get on an incline occationally. I've checked the sensors, the fluids are all good. The only thing I noticed while looking under it was a small broken spring to the left side of the transmission near the driver side door. I couldnt tell where it was supposed to be connected to but it was near enough to the transmission where I thought I should maybe ask and see if it could be the cause of the problem.

darkies - I don't know if the slipping is due to the broken spring, but that sounds like your throttle valve cable return spring is broken. That spring is on the left side of the transmission just above the forward third of the transmission casing pan. The spring attaches to the shift cable bracket at the front end, and the throtle valve cable/lever at the back end. The other end of the cable attaches to the right side of the throttle body on top the engine. Good luck!

Thanks for responding. I think you are right about what spring it is, it is around that location. I just searched for what would happen if that spring were to break or become disconnected and a couple people had some transmition related problems because of it as well as completely skipping out of gear. So I'm going to look into getting another spring tomorrow and see how it works out. Thanks again for your help and I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks everyone for your help, my transmission is working fine now. After replacing the spring, I drained the transmission fluid, put in a new filter, then added new fluid. The problem seems to have worked itself out and is not stalling anymore. Thanks again. I do have a new problem I have to get worked out so look for that too if you would.
