View Full Version : Custom Fiberglassing ?'s Custom Fiberglassing ?'s 2AZN4U 01-12-2006, 07:57 PM 1) For door panels, how do you mount them to your door? I want to make a complete customized fiberglass door with just a door handle...I plan to relocate all the window/lock controls towards the center. 2) I have a good idea on how to create a fiberglass dash yet I still have some questions. How do you create your mounts for them? And where can you get customized gauges that will be "plug & play" or custom single gauges in general, I can always rewire them, I'm good at that lol 3) I have a 5spd manual and instead of using a boot to cover my shifter, I plan on fiberglassing the shifter or just painting it. Although I want to make a piece that has the gear lay out on it. How would I go about making that without having to do tons of trial and error by snipping here and there? I am pretty n00b w/ fiberglass but have a very good idea of what I'm doing...I think, ahh well, experience is everything with fiberglass, might as well start big! LoL Thanks guys, laters jsntarrant 01-15-2006, 11:34 AM start by going to some of the fg sites... http://www.the12volt.com http://carstereo.com http://www.caraudio.com these sites will point you in the right direction...as far as your doors build off of your existing panel so they can be remounted http://www.explorerforum.com/fiberglass/fiberglassing.htm 2AZN4U 01-15-2006, 09:34 PM I figured as much but uhhh......I don't want the same structure or "options" on my door panels, I actually want them fairly flat with just the speakers, I plan on re-locating most of the things on the door. directory 01-20-2006, 11:40 AM 1) For door panels, how do you mount them to your door? I want to make a complete customized fiberglass door with just a door handle...I plan to relocate all the window/lock controls towards the center.? after you make the actual panels (first measuring--then remeasuring where the attachment screws are) you can mount them on the doors then hide the screws with covers or tabs--or--you could build into the panel, a curve or tab that will allow you to screw then into the door jams--thus allowing a smooth look on the door itself, with all screws in the door jambs (allow for clearance--if a tight fit) 2) I have a good idea on how to create a fiberglass dash yet I still have some questions. How do you create your mounts for them? And where can you get customized gauges that will be "plug & play" or custom single gauges in general, I can always rewire them, I'm good at that lol? do you really need to make a whole new dash? why not use the original dash and add to it? you can use the original dash as a template and cut and add to it as you wish, filling holes where you want and making new holes where you want--then the mount issue would be taken care of as it would still hold the original mount points on the back... 3) I have a 5spd manual and instead of using a boot to cover my shifter, I plan on fiberglassing the shifter or just painting it. Although I want to make a piece that has the gear lay out on it. How would I go about making that without having to do tons of trial and error by snipping here and there? you're going to want to account for the movement of the gear shift while shifting, this may show more of the shifter than you want, but may not. it pretty much will be trial and error on this peice. don't make the over-all job harder than it needs to be. why not use the original panels where possible and just fiberglass over them for the look you are trying to acheive. then all the original mounting points will be saved. another option would be to make a mold of the back of each item..but that just puts more steps and more issues into the process... directory 01-20-2006, 11:41 AM I figured as much but uhhh......I don't want the same structure or "options" on my door panels, I actually want them fairly flat with just the speakers, I plan on re-locating most of the things on the door. use the original panals...cut a new hole for the new placement and fill the holes for the old places. 2AZN4U 01-21-2006, 02:19 AM I could, use the original dash but it actually seems like a lil more work to chop the thing up and then add stuff to it, then fiberglassing. The door panels are along the same thing, because it is in a couple pieces and the plastic used on the door panels, I am not sure if the fiberglass will hold. The shifter piece, I figured it would be trial and error, was hoping for a miracle. And I'm not really trying to make things harder than they already are. I'm not afraid to go all out on the work itself to give it a better look that I like, I am not sure how I plan on doing those parts and still in the designing stages.
