Repair difficulty estimate neededChoochCharlie 01-12-2006, 07:51 AM My father has a 1992 F150. It needs a pan gasket and timing chain cover gasket. Shop wants $1000 for the job. The leaking oil has completely covered the tailgate. Pretty funny. I leaned up against it the other day and ruined my coat. My question: This seems steep, how terrible would the job be to do my self? I have done pan gaskets in car on several other vehicles and have done full rebuilds twice. I know how to wrench. Is this job worth paying someone else to do it? Seems one has to lift the motor to get to the pan. Tough? How about the timing cover? ChoochCharlie 01-13-2006, 08:22 PM Anyone? unclebubbles 01-13-2006, 11:41 PM My father has a 1992 F150. Seems one has to lift the motor to get to the pan. Tough? How about the timing cover? You didnt say which engine you have. Some are easier than others, but youll have to loosen the motor mounts, and raise the engine. Sometimes you have to take the exhaust loose to get it up high enough. You may have to take the shroud off, but if you gotta put a timing cover gasket and seal, you need to anyway. It aint fun rolling around on your back to do this, and the cleaning and preparation to put it back right, is difficult in tight places. Personally, on most i will pull the engine. With the right tools/air tools , you can have it out and hanging on an engine stand in a couple of hours without sweating. Then you can get to everything easily. To me its faster in the long run, and i dont like rolling around on my back, getting dirt and oil in my eyes . 1000$ seems a little high, but how much is your time worth to you? How long it takes you will depend on the tools and equipment you have , and not to insult you, but how good you are with wrenches. Get everything clean, and dont hurry and shortcut. It wont be fun to start with, and less fun to do over. Good luck. Later Ed . ChoochCharlie 01-15-2006, 04:41 PM Exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks. truckdude239 01-23-2006, 09:28 AM get a one piece gasket not a 4 piece they aren't worth the money i installed a 4 piece on my truck had to unbolt the exhauxt motor mounts jack up the motor and place 2x4 blocked under the motor mounts truckdude239 01-26-2006, 11:26 AM but yes 1000 buxs is resonable for the job call me crazy but when i rebuilt the bottom end the ford dealer wanted 1500 to do it just because they had to pull the engine to do it says its crazy for 1000 buxs i'll juts pull the motor and install a new one so i did it my self at school for 200 buxs but took me 2 weeks because i had a class period a day to work on it vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
