my vehicle claim history: what does it mean?dubwiser 01-10-2006, 09:47 PM 1999 elantra, 2 liter, 4-cyl, DOHC, auto @ 48,000 mi as i was going through the paperwork the previous owner had i came across a vehicle claim history report and i'm wondering what it means and what kind of info you guys can inference from it to help me out with any future problems the car might have or what to start doing NOW to maintain the vehicles performance. current (known) problem with the car: the right-rear power window does not work. the previous owner said it was due to a problem with the window pane not running on the track properly. he assured me the motor should still work but he disconnected it & taped off the loose wires himself, as not to cause a short or anything. the window is fully raised and it looks to me like it should run along the track just fine but i haven't checked for myself nor taken it in for an estimate. how much would something like this typically cost to repair? he came down $200 for this problem so i'm hoping it isn't more than that. now for the claim history: 1) 2/2003, 21,071 mi, frt dr 'power' window reg ass' 2) 1/2004, 24,854 mi, fuel pressure regulator 3) 1/2004, 24,854 mi, rear door window regulator ass' 4) 1/2004, 25,009 mi, spark plug cable set 5) 5/2004, 30,249 mi, plug-cigar lighter 6) 5/2004, 30,249 mi, spark plug cable set 7) 6/2004, 30,962 mi, canister ass'y 8) 2/2005, 38,552 mi, exhaust man. ass'y insp. & repl. i find it strange that the spark plug cable set was replaced twice within a little over 5,000 miles. should any red flags be raising from this claims history report? i have not had a mechanic fully inspect the vehicle. partly because it runs fine right now and i don't know a reputable mechanic at the moment who will be honest with me about the car's condition. any help is appreciated. thanks! peachferrari 01-11-2006, 10:15 AM Yeah, that seems pretty strange that the spark plug wires would need replacement twice like that. I have about 71000 miles on my '99 and have never needed to replace them. Of course, it depends on the care you give your engine bay, but twice within 5k miles is excessive. You may want to make sure the right spark plugs are being used. As for the power window regulators, they are known to have problems. Luckily mine are manual, so I haven't had any issues with them. It's not extremely difficult to remove the door panels, so you may be able to fix it yourself if you want to give it a try. If you are in contact with the previous owner, they should be able to give you some more insight into that maintenance history and why certain things were done. Good luck, these really are pretty good cars. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
