99 Avenger Es V6 Timing Belt WoesCHIP1218 01-10-2006, 06:09 PM replaced timing belt pulleys and waterpump in june 05. was fine until cold weather set in. when i start car when cold the waterpump pulley slips on belt causing it to squeal. timing belt is completely slack between the cams but tight from the crank to both cams. tensioner is completely bottomed out in its housing and the tensioner arm is touching the tensioner housing. i replaced belt with a new one again and replaced tensioner this time with OEM parts. checked waterpump shaft for binding, no problem here. set tensioner according to dodge factory service manual. tension checked out good. put engine back together and fired it up. no problem because it was in a 80 degree heated garage. drove it home and parked it outside. started it up the next morning and same problem, belt is slack between the cams and waterpump slips and belt squeals. dont know what else to do. cant drive car, afraid to wreck engine. could the cams be taking too much to turn causing tensioner to bottom out? if anyone has any ideas please let me know 94StealthTT 01-10-2006, 06:44 PM That is not good. You shouldnt drive it like that. I dont think it is a no tolerance engine though so there isnt the worry of having the valves go through the pistons. If the timing belt is good, the tensioner is good, the tensioner pulley is good, and the water pump is good it sounds like a human error. Either you didnt tighten the belt properly or coincidentally got a bad tensioner it should work fine. I dont think the cold weather should be the problem but just the fact that it was not driven in the garage. Check a service manual and after you set the tension on the belt torque everything down to factory spec. Sounds to me like after it is all put back together it runs for a while then comes loose so maybe something came loose and the belt lost tension. Thats my opinion otherwise take it somewhere to have it serviced. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
