Turn/hazzard flasher problem

This is a '94 GA 3.1.
The flasher AND hazzards have been intermittant for the last couple of days i.e. on an all or nothing basis. They now seem to have failed altogether. Completely dead, no lights, no clicks, no indicators on the dash. Looking at the diagrams in the Haynes manual I cannot see a single point failure mode that might cause this behaviour.
The fuses are OK. The turn signals and hazzards have seperate flasher units so one of the flashers failing should not take out both the turns and flahers. It would appear that a multifunction switch failure should not impact the hazzards (but is the hazzard switch part of the same assembly?). I would expect grounding or bulb failure to affect only left OR right and maybe(?) the hazzards.
Any pointers greatly appreciated.
