Does anyone know how hard it would be to swap a 2.9L with a 4.0L. I have a 87 ranger I'm just wondering if it would bolt up to my transmisson and would I have to make some custom motor mounts.

a 4.0 is basicaly a bored and stroked 2.9 engine block. I think the mounting brackets are in the same place and I know the trannys will bolt up without any mods.

Are you pretty sure that the 4.0L will bolt up my transmission. Its an automatic type T transmission.

I just did a double check on this web site http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/4L_Conversion.html and it appears that everything will work from your 2.9. You can also use the same mounting brackets. The wiring is in the same place and just about all the accesories (radiator, A/C compressor, etc.) will work on the 4.0. Im not totally sure about the auto trannys so you might want to get a second opinion on that.
