Ladies and gentlemen I could sure use your help. I have the oppurtunity to purchase a 1992 Escort LX E sedan. First off I have some experiance with the 1.8s, I own 2 but I have had very little trouble with either of them. It has 112k on it, good compression, it is getting fuel. It cranks over freely, has a new distributor, plugs and wires. To me this sounds like a crank sensor but I was wondering if it could be the computer like the guy told me any suggestions?

Is it getting any spark? You changed the distributor? Your model of escort doesn't have a distributor instead it has EDIS (Electronic distributorless ingnition system). That and the EEC module has a 10 amp fuse designated "room" in the fuse panel just to the left of driver and down below.
Also, you could check the 15 amp "engine" fuse in the passenger compartment and check the 30 amp "fuel injector" fuse in the engine compartment.
The crankshaft position sensor could be bad if you ground a spark plug and it fires which would indicate it is firing at the wrong time. You mentioned the computer. The EDIS computer is just right of the battery and just behind the engine compartment fuse box. It could bad, too. Let us know how you make out.

Thank you for the advice so far. You are correct, it doesn't have a distributor rather a DIS system. It however has been replaced. if you would explain further about how to test the crank position sensor I would appreciate it. Thanks david

I'm not sure about how to check it. I would think that the wires coming off of it should be a closed circuit. You could check for continuity with a VOM.

I had a no spark no start problem when i first bought my car turned out to be the computer. however there are other things to look at suck as the cam sensor, crank sensor, also confirm the timing belt didnt break. Also confirm you have spark to the coil (pack) then if so check to be sure it is getting through to the plug wires to the spark plugs. Then allso check for voltage at the injectors to prove you have pulse (voltage) getting to the injectors just pull a plug of an injector. either way check those things and get back to us.
