Interesting info on the Chili. San Antonio in March. Cool. I was there this past October. Son #2 graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. Stayed a few days.

I took him to dinner at the Riverwalk downtown and we stuffed ourselves. Great steak and Mexican food. Good food there. Plus you can get the real good salsa, etc. not like that Paces junk. Of course, I can get the same here in El Paso.

Lots of sights like Riverwalk, Fiesta Texas, Sea World and the Alamo, etc.

I think Texas putting USC in their place was great. The Heisman voting should wait until after the Bowl games, as Great players do Great things in BIG games. If they did wait, Vince young would be the Heisman winner in my book. Nothing against Reggie Bush, but Vince Young schooled him on how to step up to an even higher level in a BIG game. On the salsa subject, I have a friend whose mom is from the Texas/Mexico border, and her salsa is the most awesome I've ever tasted. She says I'm the only "gringo" she knows that can eat her HOT salsa without crying like a baby. You don't stir this stuff with plastic utinsels, or you'll pull out a melted stub. I was also please dto see that Texas beat USC of course I really don't like any of the teams from the left coast. And Penn State also won their game. I live 45 miles from State College but I am not a Penn State fan. Oh well I guess it had to happen anyway they did have a decent team this year.

Being from Michigan, I was voting for all the Big Ten teams. The only one I had a problem rooting for was Ohio State, but since my ex-wife likes Notre Dame, it was easy. :evillol:

Good location. You will be central to most of San Antonio, especially to downtown and the Alamo. From where you are coming from you will probably feel very comfy in shorts. Winter in Texas is probably like your summer in Canada. Golf is great in SA and they have excellent golf courses. San Antonio is easy to get around but big. The 410 loop will take you in a circle around the whole city. Traffic can get pretty bad around rush hour and morning commute. It is laid out North to South and East to West, etc. SA Airport is in Northeast. Sea World is in west SA. Alamo Dome is Southeast. Lackland AFB Southwest. Fort Sam Houston Northeast.

To get to Sea World it will be around 15 miles one way from downtown. Just follow the green directions signs while on 410.

Yeah, as far as El Paso it is 585 miles one way. I make the trip in my Regal GS in under 7 hours with pit stops. Flight time on Southwest Airlines is under 1 hour 30 minutes.

It will probably be a very memorable experience for you.

Riding weather is really good around here unless the dust is blowing. I wouldn't mind riding with you as long as you don't mind having a Japanese sport bike on your side (Suzuki GXR-1000). My son won't need it for a while since he is being shipped off to Korea for a year.

Thats some rough riding. Normally you need a 4 stroke thumper. The one I keep track of other than the national moto and supercross races is the Tecate Baja 1000. That would be a great race to see. Two Honda XR650 dirt bikes took first and second this past November beating out all the 4 wheelers. A lot of street bikers attend the race. Good food, beer and women.

Haven't heard a word from her. Well she did call to ask how to get the trans unlock, when she forced it out of park. Told her I was never that dumb to do that.

Just a reminder to everybody to keep you security programs up to date.
I spent the hole day yesterday trying to clean one of these rootkit worms from one of our PCs.
its was called Spyware.Apropos.C now I've found it on two other machines.
I've never had so much trouble with any kind of bug before.
The scary part is it puts an installer program deep in the system driver directories so when you think your cleaning the bug from your system it actually leaves the installer
so when you reboot it installs its self all over again.
I was able to remove it but not with out damaging some system files so now I have to boot the thing three or four times before Windose fires up.
So be care full out there in cyber land.

Yeah, we have a new employment policy. Anyone cruising the Net that gets a virus after visiting a porn site, etc. gets terminated from employment. But it most often does not happen because the idiots are managers or one of the VPs. lol.

For each department and division we have image CDs so it is easier and faster just to re-image the workstation and blast the old OS away. Just takes the Tech 30 minutes.

But keeping the systems safe is all part of IT duties and definitely job security. If I quit the whole enterprise would probably go down. It is nice to have some leverage when it is time for a pay raise.

Thanx bnaylor3400 : I found a fix tool for Apropos rootkits it worked like a charm.
Fixed the damaged registry as well.if you ever need it I've got it it wasn't one from symantec ether.
I've looked at ghost years ago I'll have to take another look.

I almost choked when Miller asked the bankruptcy courts to free $90,000,000 so he could pay his execs (the people whose stupid decisions put them in bankruptcy in the first place) their bonuses while asking hourly workers to take a 66% pay cut and pay their own benefits to save money.

We need to start holding the CEOs and executives of public corporations responsible for their actions. That includes criminal charges if necessary after a full audit and investigation. Plus open their butts up for civil litigation. The precedent has been set with the Enron debacle and others.

I guess the new layout grows on you. But the color scheme leaves a lot to be desired. Too bad they don't offer skins or options to change the color. There are still some minor glitches like the smilies and the stars under the screen name but hopefully they will have it worked out soon.

I liked the old layout better, not as busy. The new lighter colors are NOT good, too bright. I think I may want some sunblock and shades, sheesh!!!

Not that I am plugging it but checkout "Glory Road". It's about how a small jerkwater college known as Texas Western College (TWC) now University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) pulled off the 1966 NCAA Basketball Championship title under the "Bear" Coach Don Haskins. The complete starting lineup was African-American. They even have Mariachis playing in the movie which was a bunch of BS back then. It never happened. Hollywood had to spruce it up or otherwise it would be boring as hell.

BTW - Even in El Paso up to the early 60s anyone other than White had to go to the back of the bus. My mother is Korean and a local bus driver would not move until she went to the back of the bus. My father got very upset and came very close to beating the living daylights out of the bus driver. He settled it by pointing to his combat ribbons from the Korean War on his Army uniform which he was wearing at the time and mentioned something about whether he wanted to live or die. The bus driver got the message and let her sit up front with my father.

My mother's hero is Reverend Martin Luther King.

also I logged onto the home page from the studio the other night, I was working with someone that had some car trouble and this full production quicktime car add popped up it was pretty impressive so maybe there making money.

If Glory Road is anything like Coach Carter, it will be a movie worth seeing. I hope it sticks to the facts and doesn't get too racial. Coach Carter did a good job of portraying it's characters as underpriveleged and flawed because of it, not oppressed for no fault of their own. I like a good movie, but I hate being subtly preached to.

Actually it depicts racism in America circa 1966 and the hard road or uphill battle the team under Coach Haskins underwent so it is classified as an anti-racism movie. It was timed to be released right before Martin Luther King Day. Some of the Southern coaches in the opposing teams are depicted as racists. Supposedly what Haskins did by having an all black starting lineup is change basketball sports history and set the stage for the NCAA and NBA as we know it today. If you want my opinion they stereotyped El Paso and Texas Western College. Ben Affleck was supposed to play Haskins but bailed out and Josh Lucas took over. Film was produced by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer directed it. Nonetheless it is a movie a lot of people can relate to especially growing up during that timeframe.

In real life the black players hated Coach Haskins but the movie massages that a little. And the Mariachi scene greeting the players at the college was a bunch of BS. It never happened. It was number one in box office sales last time I checked but IMO it is worth watching.

Synopsis:

This movie is without a doubt one of the best basketball movies ever made. Period. But, how many basketball films are there? Glory Road can best be compared to Remember the Titans, as the story is similar, and even the plot structures parallel. Like Remember the Titans, the key issue of the film is racism, and the film had every person on their feet by the end when I saw it. Bruckheimer, a decent director, does a good job of painting the opponents as racists and the Texas Western team as the shining light in the darkness. And, he does a very convincing job. However, the inclusion of a black player on KU's starting line-up is glossed over, and Kentucky's coach, Adolph Rupp, is portrayed as merely a prejudiced old man, disregarding his place as the 2nd all-time winningest coach in the NCAA. Bruckheimer's greatest strength in this film comes from the performance of Josh Lucas, who does an excellent job of portraying Coach Haskins. The in-game sequences are good, but definitely could have been greater. There are definitely some great shots, and the editing is also quite well done. This film also has an excellent message for viewers, and is one of the best anti-racism movies I've seen. The fear felt by team mates is easily transferable across the screen to the audiences. This film is also extremely uplifting. For basketball players and other athletes, it's easily to relate to the members of the Texas Western team. This is definitely a film anyone should go out and see some weekend, or rent for an open night.

I agree the racism in the south was horrible. Many people are ignorant and can't look past a person's skin color. According to the sports experts the Steelers are favored by 3 -4 points over the Seahawks. Both teams seem evenly matched but I would debate that because the positive in favor of Pittsburgh is based on their history and prior Super Bowl wins more than the actual record. Seattle was #1 seed and Pittsburgh was # 6 working it's way up. The Seahawks are the underdogs and have more to gain from a win compared to Pittsburgh. If it weren't for the "Bus" Bettis the Steelers would probably not have made it that far.

Either way it should be a great Super Bowl. Time to stock up on on plenty of beer and snacks.

Actually, I was glad to see the Steelers earn the AFC title. Best part was ruining the Patriots so called Dynasty. Things were a little rough for Pittsburgh because Roethlisberger had the injury problem with his hands.

What would be nice to figure out what the final score will be along with points spread or even scores at the end of each quarter and head to Las Vegas and see if any money can be made. They've got the whole Super Bowl dissected for betting.

Voluntary is one thing but government mandated is another. In my county we are already required to do the annual registration and rabies vacs which includes ID in the form of the metal tags. But the mandatory chip implant effective April 1, 2006 for us is just the tip of the iceberg. In addition, Animal Control will be able to canvas neighborhoods, knock on your door, and even look in your backyard to check for compliance. Non compliance will be a $2000 fine per animal which includes dogs, cats, and ferrets.

This is all because of stupid people. People that obey and comply with existing laws are paying the price. As far as I am concerned it is unequal treatment under the US Constitution. Where are poor people and the elderly on fixed incomes gonna get the money to comply?

That is the problem with living in one of the only remaining liberal counties in Texas. Also, it seems like a back door approach to getting more revenue (taxes).

The other big issue is red light cameras at major intersections. That stupid ordinance was just passed but being held up so the Texas Attorrney General can review the local law for constitutionality. I am all for red light cameras if it will save lives but research has shown just the opposite is true. Washington DC is a prime example of red light camera failure. After cameras were installed there the death toll at intersections went up not down.

Where will it end? :dunno:

The way they dig DEEP holes and eat loose sticks in the yard, I think they're a rare breed of chinese beaver dog. We are also required to get yearly vaccinations and licenses, but cats are not. My next door neighbor has about 15 cats, and they've turned wild (granted, she's 80), but they got in my yard and my dogs killed a couple of them. She wanted me to pay to bury them???? I told her sorry, but they got in my yard, so it's not my fault. I felt bad, because I have cats too, but it wasn't my fault her animals got in my yard and the dogs won. Her cats constantly get in my garbage, but I don't complain to her, I just clean it up.

Ya hear so many stories about these old cat ladys I don't know why they would want so many.
My dog's a digger to he built a basement in his dog house that got so big the house caved in.
I had the farmer next door come over with his plow to full it back in and my dog had the hole thing dug again in two days.

That would be nice Rich. Since you seem to be a Rottweiler fan here is a pic of my beloved Robby Bear. AKC and 185 lbs. His father was an AKC Champion at 205 lbs. He was a special Rottweiler bred to be big not smaller like the trend. He passed away last year at 10 years old. Big dogs don't live that long. I had him cremated and keep his ashes. He will be buried with me when I kick the bucket. Man, I loved that dog. Very intelligent. He could swallow Cats whole. No B.S.! Rex my Great Dane mix and him worked together as a team. They would corner a CAT in the back yard and then teach it a lesson. I had to pull the Cat out of Robby's mouth before he swallowed it.

It's funny too, because if he comes in the house (he prefers it outside), he plays with our cats, and he's very gentle and loving to all people, just not critters in HIS yard. IT's funny how attached we get to our animals, but I'm the same way.

Why do you think it's funny? People get attached to their kids. Dogs are easier.

IMO dogs are the best pets. Man's best friend. At least you can talk to them and they seem to understand. Their loyalty is next to none. Whatever command I issue he listens and follows. Our cat could care less and had it's own mind. I was glad to get rid of it.

You get very attached to your pets and it is rough when they pass away.

I even have to pull the shade across, because if he sees the glass, he want's to poke his head out. And just so you know, I agree about getting attached to animals. When my Border Collie Kirby died a few years back, I was a wreck for a couple of weeks, DAMN I miss that dog!!!

Interesting you bring that up Rich. Dogs love car or truck rides. All I have to say to Rex is "Lets go bye bye.......vroom vroom" and he beats me out the door to the garage. They make for nice foot warmers too. lol. :lol:

not only mans best friend but sometimes the best protecter too. growing up for me it was a beagle. once my neighbors 2 chows and 1 doberman, all three a couple of years older and much 30- 40 lbs heavier, came in our yard. my little sister went screaming into the house, and out came the dog. he took on all three dogs at once with me standing there holding a shovel in case i needed to uh....run like hell. long story short he hit the jugular vein of the doberman, ripped the fur off the neck of the brown chow like a chew toy, and got a piece of the white chows eye and ear for lunch. he had several bite marks in his ear to show for his days work, and that was it. we had him for 14 years and never once did he bite us, though we tortured him when we very young and stupid. there is a picture of me and my brother somewhere holding his head underwater- i was three and steve was 2. and of course i didnt cry when he died... at least not in front of my friends.

Seriously, I'm on the PC at various hours to do server maintenance and check status of the network. I DSL in with this nifty remote software we got from IBM a few years ago. Sometimes have to make checks around midnight too. Got to make sure the tape backups are working.

Time for some more go juice (coffee).

I used to believe that there were no dumb or inane questions. I'm going to use this graphic on the u-bend delete from now. We had a good one the other day when a guy thought that putting a water injection system in would be like the equivalent of a nitrous system. :screwy:

Without the Fast and the Furious reference, that wouldn't have been nearly as entertaining. The water injection helps when you get into 27th or 28th gear (I believe that's how many times they shifted in the first drag race).

I hear ya, thats what I was doing on line on the weekend as well.
I had to up2date and reboot one of the servers and now comes month end where I end up pulling all nighters to get stuff done allot of it can only be done when nobody is on line.

The remote software allows me to lock in on the users IP address and take remote control over their PC/workstation. On servers it is neat to be able to add users or do systems admin from the comfort of the home. Plus I can remote in to the Cisco routers.

I'm working on setting up a VPN tunnel from home so I won't have to use Remote any more than I can lock that down.
Theres always someone out there looking for a way in.
Overtime? salary here as well they can only pay you so much and then you get taxed to hell anyways.

A friend of mine bought a basket case 67 Mustang fastback, and dressed it up like a GT350. He then put a big block chevy in it, and took it to an all Ford show, claiming it was an original GT350, but the only way he could make it fast was to pull that Blue oval boat anchor out of it and put in a BB chevy. He also said he sold the original motor from the car to his neighbor for a "sleeper" Mercury Zephyr project car since he had no use for it. He literally had people threatening his life, until he finally owned up to the fib. They promptly kicked him out.

We migrated from New Jersey a long time ago. Traffic back east has gotten to where it is no fun. Big change compared to our wide open interstates in the Southwest. Still have to watch out for the State Troopers every now and then though.

I stoped the kid the next day. Up out in front of him. The I told him I'd beat his ass if he does it again. I guess I forgot I lost 100 ponds. He got out of his car. By the the guy across the street came out. And throw him almost over his car. Oh, this guy held golden gloves for about 5 years. I told the guy don't come by again, "Or the same thing will happen". Boy I hope the guy across the street is home the next time also. :rofl:

In 10 more years I will probably retire in FL. I really don't why but I like South Florida. I grew up a few years in Miami (Cutler Ridge/Homestead AFB). My father helped opened up one of the first Nike missile sites there during the Cuban missile crisis. As you know I come from an Army Air Defense family. Speaking of idiot kids, this kid was hauling a$$ in his Monte Carlo SS and failed to negotiate a curve while drag racing on the street in front of my house. He creamed his passenger side front end. Then he tried to leave the scene of the accident. Knocked down our steet name sign too. I heard the impact and ran outside. He didn't make it far because the strut had collapsed from the impact and the mag wheel had shattered. I told him son you ain't going nowhere and called 911. They called a wrecker and impounded his car. In order to negotiate these double curves at high speed you need a Porsche or Corvette. The EPPD just took delivery of a few of the new retro-style Mustang GTs. They are unmarked. Gotta watch drag racing Mustangs from now on. :biggrin:

I spent 6 years in Germany when I was in the service. So, I stick with Bitburg "Bitburger Pils" German beer. We get the real non-export version at the German Air Force Club on base. "Bitte Ein Bit".

We've got some great local brewers around here I doubt if they export though, I know you can get allot of Canadian domestic stuff in the U.S.
I like to try the local stuff where ever I go the last good one I had was in Philadelphia I don't remember what it was called but everybody was drinking it.

To all of my forum friends. This one is a downer, but I need your help. My nephew Doug ( age 14 ) was struck by a car while riding his bike yesterday and I would appreciate it if you could all say a prayer for him. He is touch and go right now, as he suffered a severe head injury and is in critical condition in intensive care. The driver of the car did nothing wrong (no excessive speed, alcohol or unattentive driving was involved), it was just one of those things that happen, a TRUE accident. Rich, Sorry to hear about the health of your nephew. This seem to be the year for prayers and phone calls. I will add him to my prayers each night.

Accidents do happen and are unavoidable. But parents have a responsibility to take extra precautions for their children's safety. I cannot emphasize the importance of wearing a helmet especially when riding bicycles and motorcycles. Statistically the majority of injuries suffered or fatalities is due to trauma to the head.

A kid busted his head open while riding his ATV out in the sand dunes and I was able to give him first aid due to my military training until we could get a Medivac helicopter. Fortunately, he is alive today.

Since you'll be visiting our fine sovereign State of Texas, here is the current law on motorcycle safety/helmets:

Everyone under 21 years old must wear one and if exempt and over 20 you have to have a decal posted on the bike for the cops to see.

I track the fatalities we have in El Paso County and the bikers that are more likely to die on a bike are Harley riders (older men). The sport bikes are manned by kids normally under 21 so most wear helmets. When those kids are fatalities it is due to massive multiple trauma because there is nothing left after a high speed crash.

Dirt bikes and ATVs are exempt when riding on private property and riding areas. I wear mine religiously because you will encounter a lot of religious experiences while on any motorcycle.

I wish I was bringing my bike there but I have to go for work.
Its getting to be that time of year when I wish the snow would disappear so I can ride again.

My son's birthday is Sunday, 2/19/06, they were 2 years apart but very close. Thank you again for the well wishes and prayers, at least he's in a better place now.

Rich, I have a friend that calls me every week and tells me how bad he feels for me. I gave him your note. Told him what do I or him have to feel bad about. I'm 56, married to the greatest woman in the world. When I go, it will be with a great long life. I can count all my friends. I have had some of the best cars made. I have lived my life to it's best.
I truely feel bad about your lost. If there is ever anything I can do, please let me know.

She was not wearing a helmet or any other safety gear and suffered severe head injuries. She was pronounced brain dead. They just had her funeral yesterday. Very sad and tragic.

I really feel for everyone in a similar situation especially being a parent of four teenage kids myself. These things happen and only God has the reasons why.

yeah i know all that salt and snow takes a big toll on everyones cars, i feel bad for eveyone who likes to keep their cars looking nice and then all that winter weather and salt starts to ruin everything slowly but surely. but yeah i definetly dont want to give up on this car, theres alot of money invested in it now and im in love with it too, all my friends say it fits me.

Yeah Wylie, tell us about it. Rust....what is rust? I don't have any. We don't get much rain or snow in my area. No salt on the roads and average humidity is only around 10%. However, sand and blowing dust is a major problem. The wind storms get so bad that it will sandblast the finish and all glass.

It all comes out in the laundry no matter where you live.

However it is all cosmetic and repairable. Rust and corrosion is worse.

The worst is when the salt gets you door panels and they rust out from the inside.I've never liked a car as much as this one I really wish I space to put away in the winter but by the time I buy a bigger house it will have corroded away,"as tears roll from eyes"

also this is probably really random, but i noticed on some cars with the gas guage, when you shut off the ignition the guage needle will go to empty and then when you turn the ignition back on it will go back to how much gas you have, just curious and i figured i'd post that in this thread since its not a problem or so.

Hey Wylie, since your car is Black, go with Chrome. The Boss 226's deviate from a stock look without being to "ricer", and I like the Boss 313's for the same reason. If your area isn't potholed like the moon (as they are here in Flint, MI), go with a +1 17" with a slightly shorter sidewall tire to fill the wheel well a little better. Going with 18's would push you into "ricer look" territory again. Just my :2cents:

I agree Rich. You really can't tell by pics on how it is going to look on your car. Nothing like seeing them up close at a showroom and then make a decision even though you may purchase from someone else or off the internet.

i know most of you oldies are going to laugh but this last weekend i watched a movie called "pontiac moon." ever heard of it? had the old pontiac cheif/ cheifton in it. i have seen the grill emblem on the forum here but never knew it came from an actual ponitac. the ol' car had over 200k on it- guess pontiac was making them good back then too!

Good question. What does yours do?

mine stays in the same position even when the ignition is off, but my mom's '01 chevy venture drops to "E" when shut off. i noticed that van has alot of the same parts as the Grand Prix too.

I believe that it has to do with how the cluster is wired. The fuel guage is basically an ohm meter, and the sender in the tank is a variable resistor. If the guage cluster is wired/grounded through the ignition switch, the guage will go to zero when the ignition is turned off. If the cluster is grounded to the chassis, it will read regardless of key position.

ohhhh ok, now it makes sense. also, as i posted before i also noticed that there are alot of the same parts too on my mom's 01' venture as on my car too, like the steering column looks the same, the keys look the same etc. im sure the steering wheels could be swaped too. i noticed that GM likes to make alot of parts the same for all their cars, in some cases cars will actually look exactly the same only the name and emblems will be different. i geuss thats easier though if you need hard to find parts.

Parts interchangeability makes it easier and cheaper to stock their plants with parts, and gets a new model to production a lot quicker. My wife has a red 97 Trans-Sport, (my car is a Red 99 Grand Prix Gt) and our vehicles use a lot of the same parts. I think our neighbors call us the crazy Red Pontiac people in the middle of the block. :lol:

The fuel gauge on my GTP reads wth ignition off so that appears to be normal. On both of my Regals the fuel gauge drops to below E with ignition off. It goes to show that not all GM '"W" bodies are created equal. But it sure is nice having parts that are interchangeable for troubleshooting purposes. However, not all GM parts are interchangeable so you have to be very careful even though they may look the same. Verify the part number.
