Hi I need somebody's help on my BMW A/C problem....

I got a pre-owned certified 1998 528i and worked fine as it was winter... In a few months when it came to turn the air on... guess what air coming out stinks.... I have gone to 3 different BMW center and have spent over 500$ as warranty doesn't cover it.....

I have changed the external air inflow filters, Tubing system washed twice, and A/C water drain opened (found clogged by one BMW dealer?), still it doesn't fix the problem.......

I don't know what to do? doesn't this become a lemon? Can I return the car on this basis? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this A/C problem... actually the air is only bad when I set it to come from outside(fresh)... A/C on is a little better.....

I appreciate any comments thanks.....

Check the fresh air duct. To try to clean it, use a solution that is safe for plastics, like a weak pine sol in water mix. Spray the solution (you want it to be a mist) into the duct with the blower on high, temp set to max cooling (compressor on), set on outside air, windows open. Lay some rags or towels loosely ove the vents. Once you've got it saturated, shut down and let it sit an hour or two, then repeat the process. Don't overdo the strength of the solution, leaving it in contact should kill the odor. When you're done, take a nice drive with the same settings. Humid outside air crossing the coil will rinse it with condensate (water from the air). That oughta do it.

What you have sounds like a classic case of "dirty sock syndrome" it is actually quite common in all makes of cars and even in home air conditioners in some climates. Another solution.... take a can of Lysol (fresh linen scent is my fav..) turn your AC on in the vent mode full fan and wait a few minutes. then spray the lysol into the outside intake. Use the entire can in several sessions over a period of 15 minutes. Turn the AC off and let it sit for an hour before restarting. The smell should be gone.

I've used this successfully on a number of cars with great success. On some cars the smell never came back, on my wifes Miata I just noticed it again this week and I last treated it two years ago...
