While crawling under my Trooper, I noticed the outer CV boot clamp had come off and that part of the lip of the boot was torn off. My dealer quoted $658.00 to replace this $35.00 rubber boot! Another mechanic estimated 4.7 hours and $360.00. But he didn't sound too sure he could do the job.

The biggest problem is finding someone competant to make the repairs other than the dealer. I'm not.

I'm considering replacing the clamp over the portion of the lip remaining, and repacking the grease. Just how dumb is this, and are there any other solutions to this problem? And how unsafe is this?

I'd really appreciate any advice or imput you guys could offer.

Paul that sounds like a plan to me!, I'd peel the boot back, clean the joint with parts cleaner, regrease and reclamp it- provided there is enough material to get a good clamp seal. Any shop that can do a regular FWD car CV boot/joint replacement should be able to do a 4x4 trooper. There is more parts in the hub due to the 4x4, that's about it. If you have 10/120 or even the 5/60 warranty, the dealer will cover this for you.

I've already got 80K on my truck, so the 5/60 warranty is out. I thought the 10/120 covered the Powertrain only. I'm somewhat doubtful that the CV boot would be considered PowerTrain. I'll have to check on that. Of course, the dealer didn't mention it at all.

If you are the oringinal owner I would think the CV boots are part of the power train. I know a leaky rear or front diffy would be covered. A leaky trannsmission too. So why not a CV boot?

Might be worth your time to call up corperate Isuzu to get the real info. The dealer might just snowball you.

Here's the 10/120 warranty link per the isuzu site: http://www.isuzu.com/owners_warranty_10120k.html CV joints are covered as are all seals and gaskets. I would assume CV joint boots are a seal/gasket, but I'm sure a dealer would try to weasel out. If they do, I'd call 800-255-6727.

As it turned out, the CV boot is covered by the 10/120 warranty. My dealer do the repairs this week.

CV joints dont even have to be covered do they????????? i never had mine covered on my jeep
