85' engines

Hey everyone
I just pulled out of storage my family's good old 85' Caprice Classic station wagon. I have a friend who wants to buy it from me, but for the time being we're getting it driveable by replacing a bad power brake booster. I was wondering if anyone knows what different engines these cars were equipped with for this year? There's not a label to be found anywhere and I'm not sure where on the block to look for an engine code. I'd use the VIN but I'm not even sure that the motor that's in it is original! I believe my dad (this was his car) told me it is a 305, but I am sure because he said that it had another engine beforehand...Any input would be greatly appreciated!

If it's a right-hand dipstick block (which all 79-85 blocks are), look on the side of the block near the oil pan rail. A 305 should have "201" on the casting, a 350 should say "207". Aside from this, the only surefure way to tell would be to pull one of the heads and measure the bore. A 305 will be ~3.74 inches and a 350 will be 4.00 inches.

The 9C1 Impala and Caprice and the 1A2 Impala/Caprice wagon were available with the 350 throughout the 80s. If the wagon was one of those, it might well have a 350 in it.

Didn't the 85 wagons come w/the 307 Olds engine?

No, that started in '86. The '85 still had the 305 Chevrolet.
