My 05 Camry brake pedal gets "hard" at a point when the pedal is higher than the gas pedal. It then keeps going almost to the floor as long as pressure is exerted (kind of like it's needs bleeding, but it only comes up a little if pumped). If my foot is on the right edge of the pedal I can hit the gas pedal and move the car which was a probelm at first (I got used to it, but find it hard to believe that it was engineered to do this). I had the dealer check and adjust it today, but it's not any better.

My question is, are they all ike this or does my car sound different than the rest of you? Thanks in advance. Tom

Mine sometimes do that too. I have 98 Camry.

If I pump the brakes a bit it comes up again. The gas sometimes do that too.

My 04 Camry LE has the same problem.

Sounds like my '01, too. Hate it, after driving on GM brakes. My wife's old ('95)Prizm had springs that spread the front pads apart...wonder if they're still doing that? Just got the car from my sister, and time hasn't permitted anything more than a rear shoe adjustment. It helped a little, but I think they're still too soft, with too much travel. It does feel like the front pads are being spread apart, hence the pumping being effective...but I remember the Prizm brakes feeling much better. Brake fluid change coming soon, but not expecting much based on previous (30+ yrs) repair experience. I know my rotors are level and drums are round as there is not a hint of pulsation or vibration, or bearing noise either.
Do we all have rear drums?

My 03 Camry LE is the same.......I hate it. The Toyota Camrys that I drove have always had this problem. The only time I ever rear-ended another car was with my 92 Camry.....cause the darn brakes just wouldn't stop the darn car in time! I am commited to the fact that I will NEVER use Toyota OEM brakes ever again. I am absolutely astonished that there hasn't been a class action against Toyota for such lousy brakes. My 87, 92 and now my 03 brakes are all the same.....lousy! :nono: :loser:

My kid's 05 Corolla S has very good brakes, although they tend to lock up fairly quickly, so possibly it has a "different" brake system. :rolleyes:

There is nothing wrong with the brakes. They have built in exponential so morons can properly stop a car without giving people whiplash.


If you apply the pedal quickly, it will be as stiff as any sport car. Don't like it, buy a car with brakes that are hard to use in day-to-day driving, and should be found on a Porche.

To review... If the pedal is moving quickly, you will get stiff brakes. That does not mean slam the brakes, or shove the pedal through the firewall.



There is a reason 3400-3500lb Camry/ES/Windom's stop as fast, or faster than nearly anyhting in their class. It's because they have very good brakes. If you notice, on stock tires all the v6 front brakes can activate ABS well over 60mph.
