94 Sunbird.......Help needed!

I have a 94 Sunbird LE 4cyl and it shakes really bad when I am idle and just a little while I am driving. Could it be more than my engine mounts being loose? What could be the problem?

If it sits and shakes I would have to say it's more then likely a tune up is needed, see if you have a 6 or V8 and you have a problem with a spark plug not fireing, you may never really notice it, but on a 4 banger one drops out it acts like the engine tossed a rod.

If you are able to work on cars a little go buy a Tec Book on your car, like at a Auto Zone or Pep Boys and read how to change your Plug wires, cap rotor, and spark plugs. Or you can pay to have it done.

In any case it's allways best to talk or take your car to a pro.


It could be your mounts, I don't know alot about the sunbirds but I feel as if that it's a 4cyl and being only a 94 the mounts should not have a problem, and on top of that the mount it's self is made that if it fails it will not cause the engine to shake like your talking about.

Thanks a lot. I actually had a tune up already, got a new timing belt and water pump put in, and a new radiator. It is a used car. I am afraid to drive it but someone told me it is ok to drive, but to be on the safe side I wont drive it.

I would check your spark wires then, one may have come off.

Did the problem just "happen" or did it build up to what it is now?

Did you change the motor mounts? Clean the throttle plate? Set the timing?

Sounds abit like my little girls car right befor tranny lost 3rd gear, just sitting at stop sign felt pretty bad. better now but nothing but 1st gear when in drive, must put it down in 2nd to get her to school now. Looking for some help on how much I will have to pay for salvaged tranny, I have put alot of labor into this ride in the last year. New head , alt., drive shafts and brakes. Just gettin the head off for inspection took about 6 hours. Shop in town did'nt even want to look at it for less than $700. plus parts after that. did head myself for about $450 total $330 for recon head plus gaskets and belts. Not a fun job, but I lucked out once again.
