hello everyone,i am new to this forum.
i have a question i hope someone can help me with.
i have a 1996 toyota camry,4 cyl.,136000 miles.
just recently ,when i start cold engine,i have to rev to keep idle
or engine dies and acts as if is starved for fuel, difficult to restart.
i recently replaced egr valve,plug wires,plugs,fuel filter,air filter,
keep maintenance up on regular basis, oil, filters etc.
anyone have idea what this could be?
your help is appreciated.
thank you,

Well, my 93 was doing something similar, though it was when the car's engine was warmed up. Turned out to be the ignition coil inside the distributor. Could be the same thing?

Check the ECT sensor.

Sorry Biigpuker and rwm944, but the 96 4 cylinder (2.2 liter 5SFE engine) doesn't use a cold start time switch. The computer get's it's reading direct from the ECT (engine coolant temperature sensor) and richens up the mixture accordingly, to start a cold engine. That's why Brian suggested you check it.

thanks for the advice and the links.
where is the ect sensor located?
i found a wire this pulled out of the upper
o2 sensor and spliced back on this afternoon,
the engine has fired up twice now, cold starts and held idle
perfectly.first start after 24 hrs.,second 3 hours later.
with everything tied into computers ,i guess that
makes sense,at least so far.
will see how long that lasts.
thanks again,

"where is the ect sensor located?"

It is the second sensor (left-most) from the point at which the upper radiator hose connects to the engine block. Usually, it is green with an electrical connection and is vertically mounted.

Dowload the '94 Camry manual from the sticky post at the top of this forum. Refer to page EG1-219.
