All,

The ABS and Traction Control lights are on steady on my 2000 Windstar and not too long afterward my speedo started reading what appears to be exactly 1/2 the normally indicated speed, i.e. 30 mph indicated means I'm going 60 mph. Needless to say, living in Maine and with winter now in full swing, I would like the wife to have all of the above working correctly.

I'm a pretty handy guy and prefer to do all of my own maintenance, so I visually inspected all the main ABS and speedo part to see if there was anything obvious. I didn't find any smoking gun so after my thorough visual etc., and not having the equipment required to download ABS codes, I broke down and took my van to the dealer to have them diagnose what was going on.

They said that all three issues & codes were related to the ABS circuit and that they metered the ABS wiring harness and found nothing wrong with that. They then said the metered the ABS electronic control unit and found that it was faulty--they also indicated that the pump side of the system was OK. They said they could replace the ECU to the tune of $773.66 so I naturally balked at that.

So with the $130 I have invested in diagnosis, I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced similar issues and whether (or not) replacing the ECU really fixed the problem. From the posts I've read thus far on the topic, I would be some Bull Sh__ if someone put a nickel's worth of DOT3 Brake Fluid in my reservoir and then charged my $900+ for parts and install time, especially considering the fact that I've chased down some pretty nasty wiring harness issues on this vehicle already!

Thanks in advance,
Matt
