rattling noise

Alright I just changed my timing belt and got it back together. I'm hearing a loud rattling sound now. I drove the car a few miles like that and it drives great. I'm thinking that the tensioner for the timing belt is bad. How does it come off and has this happend to anybody else?

Year make and model and engine and how many doors would help for info.
Better check the lower cranhshaft pulley.

it's a 96, 2door with a 1.9. It has 146k and to my knowledge the timing belt was never done until now. I got it around 80 with the impression it was just done. The belt broke, but it drove fine so I assume I none of the valves came in contact with the pistons. I don't even know if it's a contact engine or not actually. The lower crank pulley seems fine. I torque it again just to be sure though. The timing belt tensioner had some metal sticking out of it. It was all discolored. I almost wanna say thats there to help hold it on

My car did it the first time I changed my timing belt. I had it to tight and I think it was putting to much tension on the water pump. I can tell you more but want to make sure you have the 1.9L engine first.

Ya know I did kinda tighten the hell out of it. I'll loosen it some and see what happens.

I was wrong and right. It was the tensioner, but half the bearings were missing out of it!! So I need a new one. Great stuff

My tensioner came with the water pump. Can't remember if it can be bought seperately. A few weeks ago my car was making a sound like the water pump going out. Found I had some slack in the timing belt. Adjusted it 'by the book' and noise is gone. I threw away my timing belt cover. SOB is in the way!

I've had some trial and error deals with the timing belt. It's safe to say I can take it off and on with no probs in a minimal amount of time. I threw my cover away to. SOB def was in the way. I ordered a kit for it. It was fairly inexpensive. $25 or so. Comes with spring and tensioner. I have no idea how to replace it. I assume that you just unscrew it and it comes off. Do you know how it comes off?

If you unscrew the nut in the center of the pulley then the pulley will come off. Not sure about the spring. It may come right out.

The spring applies the proper tension to the belt. Don't give it any 'extra' like I did.

Leave the pulley loose enough that it can move back and forth with spring tension. Get a ratchet and turn the crankshaft clockwise two complete turns. Then tighten the pulley bolt. After this the spring does nothing because it can't move now. Good Luck!
