Tried to start my q45 this morning and it wouldn't start. I turn the key and it sounds like a higher pitch winding sound. Could it be the starter?
Any help appriciated.....

Could be a couple of things. The starter could be turning, but the bendix is not engaging the fly wheel. I've never had/seen this, but it's possible and fairly easy to verify. The other is more pernicious. The high pitch could be the engine spinning without compression, as with a broken timing chain. I've heard this on other cars and it's unmistakable. A knowledgeable, trusted source should be able to tell from a quick listen, maybe even over a telephone.

Max about has it. Have someone look at the drive belts while turning the key to start. if the drive belts are not spinning (crankshaft) then starter prolly not engaging. if the drive belts are turning but you still have high pitched, then it could be the guides.

chain guides are the #1 demise of 90-93 Q's.

Tell us about your fuel system maintenance. Was your fuel pump buzzing very loudly? New fuel filter every 12K? Do you drive your tank below 1/4 before refilling?

Even if it is not your chain guides, you would be wise not to even start your engine again until theyare inspected. Most stress is upon starting.
