I have had 2 2002 crowns with timing chain guide failures. Has anyone else seen this. Both cars had regular oil changes with penzoil 5w20 every 3000 mikes. Engine is clean inside.

No, timing chain issues on the modular Ford engines are RARE, and usually caused by either an oil or assembly problem.

These cars would be about 3 years old and have 100k on them? Do they idle alot? If so, it *may* be an oil issue.

These are both police cars that are serviced regulary. I did notice that this last one was 3 quarts low on oil and 800 miles overdue. They never had any problems with their early cars.94,95,97,98,

Extended idle is the thing that breaks oil down the quickest, especially if there are any problems with the oxygen sensors and the engine is running rich.

I see a lot of CV's in the deler for timing chain guide problems. We run a fleet of about 900 Fords, most of them CVPI's and have no timing chain failures. We use 15w40 oil. Most outside shops use a lighter oil, like 5w30 because that is what Ford calls for.

Are you located in warm climate? It the cold weather we used to have problems witht the heavy oil blowing the oil cooler.

In Kentucky. We had the same problem with oil coolers. But we lost about 50 coolers with the vehicle having les that 2000 miles with factory oil in it. Was kinda poor design.

The last 4.6 engine I had rebuilt had both sides bad. Cost a few more bucks but it was worth replaceing since the whole engine was apart anyway. BTW the car only had 89k on it but had 4 bad cylinders, one cracked head and bad rings. From what the mechanics at the State garage that maintain them said, most if not all their engine problems result from the poor octane gas they get from the lowest bidder. I don't know if that would have anything to do with it, but I agree lots of idling can multiply the odometer clock reading by a factor of 3.
